Matthew Sung stood at the end of the hallway of the emergency room. He was completely dazed. In the five years that Sam worked for him it was the first time that he saw her like she was reliving a nightmare.
When Sam collapsed, he didn't know what to do. All he could remember was carrying her to his car and rushing to the emergency room. The halls were a little dimmed, the smell of alcohol lingering around every corner and people were coming from all over the place like danger is inevitable.
A man dressed with an operating gown walked pass him and he couldn't help but asked him about Sam.
"Excuse me doctor, how is she?" He could see the hope lost in the doctor's eyes as his breath tightened.
"We did everything we could but your wife didn't make it sir. We only managed to save the baby." Matthew couldn't process what the doctor had just said. Confusion was written all over his face.
"What baby?" He thought internally. He didn't know Sam was pregnant and she didn't seem pregnant too. But Sam was dead and he didn't know what to do. All he had left was her baby.
Then another doctor walked out of the emergency room.
This doctor had a smile in his face like he just had a dose of sunshine and rainbows but his smile faded when he saw Matthew talking to the other doctor.
"Dr. Wong you got the wrong family again. Mr. Li is right over there." He said as he pointed a sobbing middle aged man near the vending machine holding a baby bag close to his chest.
Matthew couldn't get more confused. What the hell is going on? Who - what - when - how?
Then the other doctor approached Matthew with a smile.
"Mr. Sung the patient was transferred to a regular room. She had a strong panic attack which caused her to faint so but she's fine now - just heavily sedated." He patted Matthew's shoulder and directed him to a small room.
He thanked the doctor and walked closer to Sam's bed. She looked like an princess ripped out of a fairytale.
But why was she heavily sedated? This was something that bothered him because from what he knew panic attacks just simply come and go. You just have to breathe. He shook his head and decided to shake the thought away. Whatever Sam was hiding he wanted to know it too but he wanted to let her open up to him at her own pace.
Unseen scars are caused by deeper wounds. Those that are too painful enough to be seen and acknowledged by the world. Yet he still wanted to see hers. He wanted her all these years but he never saw her break down and that was something he admired her for until today.
You think you know a person because you've been with them for so long but one day you start to falter. Doubting them and the secrets they keep.
