Chapter 10 - Time to Fight

Dark Lord of Tartarus

***

Many soldiers were gathered at the southern gate of the town. The giant gates were closed. Soldiers were positioned on top, inside the body of the wall and outside the town.

In the middle part of the southern wall, the frontal direction of the gates were bunkers with soldiers inside, and defensive barriers which can protect soldiers behind plus each barriers have rectangular holes to enable soldiers to shoot through it.

On the left side and right side of the barriers there were sandbags and behind those the ground were dug to lower the surface level and to provide more protection from the attacks – in short "trenches", and of course there were soldiers on guard there and at their designated positions.

Tanks were deployed on the left and right side of the barriers in front of the sandbags, each side has two tanks.

On top of the wall there were multiple artillery weapons installed.

In the middle most part of the wall an Anti-aircraft gun was installed. On its right side is where the experimental magic cannon were installed then next to the cannon was another Anti-aircraft gun and lastly a normal magic cannon.

On the left side of the middle most Anti-aircraft gun was a normal magic cannon, next to it was an Anti-aircraft gun and lastly a magic cannon.

The Anti-aircraft guns were already installed around the top of the surrounding wall, because of that they saved a lot of time and effort during their preparations.

It was like eight in the morning and it was a fresh new day with a relaxing wind passing on top of the wall. However, this was not the day to be relaxed and slack off. Today is the day of the said attack of an unknown enemy.

Most of the soldiers were tense and uneasy. They don't know when exactly the enemy will attack so they have to keep their guard up all the time. Watchers were stationed on top of the wall to check for any movements on the plains.

The surrounding areas were once a forest before the military arrived. But when the military was stationed there, the surrounding trees were cut down for the purpose to have a clear sight around the vicinity of the town. There could probably be enemies using the trees as cover and slowly advanced to the town and many more advantageous uses of the forest, that is why it is necessary to cut down all the trees.

There are no roads on the south side, also on the east side. But there are roads on the western and northern side. The gates were made on each side so it would be easy and fast to go around, but those were not simple gates, the gates were made large and made of metal, not only that each gates were also fortified.

Jonas was walking around the top of the southern wall. He was checking if everything was ready. All artillery weapons were now ready to fire at any moment, crews on every gun are prepared to aim and fire.

Several crates were lying all around the top of the wall. Some were ammo crates and others contain weapons.

Jonas was now fully prepared for combat, wearing a body armor, helmet and holding a high grade magic rifle.

He stopped and stood at the right side of the middle part of the wall. He looked below him, his right side, unto the distance, and to his left side.

To the left side of the wall he saw Ana holding her Barrett. She was all battle prepared.

It was essential to put her on top of the wall because of her being a sniper and also of her innate gift.

Ana is able to enhance things that she is wielding. For instance, her sniper rifle, a Barrett would already be terrifying and damaging enough, but if Ana uses her magic, the Barrett's power will greatly increase. The force and speed of the bullet will be doubled or tripled if she wants to, thus the bullet can have more penetrating damage, and she can even make a clean hole on a tank with ease.

Then Jonas returned his sights unto the distance and keenly observing.

When are they going to attack? If they are planning to surprise us, we could probably handle it. But it makes me anxious not knowing when the enemy will attack, and they're not even showing themselves yet.

Jonas thought.

The watchers were still not reporting anything, so the opposition might still be far. Of course he stationed watchers on the east and west just to make sure, but there were no reports yet. Also they sent some scouts around the area.

For everything was still at peace, Jonas decided to walk around more and walked to the left side of the middle part.

He came across the Anti-aircraft gun so he checked on the crew for a while.

There were three soldiers there working on the gun.

"You seem to be still checking the gun." Jonas said to the crew.

"Sir." The three said and saluted then Jonas saluted back.

"Yes. After all, it is better to check the guns while there are still no enemies to make sure there won't be any problems."

"That's good soldiers."

Jonas looked at the faces of the soldiers and notice one of them seemed to be so uneasy.

"You alright kid?"

"—A-ah, sir… Actually this will be my first battle, and I'm a bit nervous and… scared."

"It's alright kid. Everyone always feels that way, especially when it's your first time. Just remember what you are fighting for and that will help you mend your feelings."

The man lowered his head and a few seconds he raised it up and stiffened his face.

"For my hometown, I will fight the enemy."

Jonas smiled.

"That's good kid. Now, I'll be going."

"Thank you for checking on us sir."

Jonas nodded and proceeded to walk forward.

As he was walking, he saw Ana looking on the scope of her sniper rifle. When he was closing in on Ana, he decided to talk to her for a bit to check on her.

"Hi, Ana. Keeping a keen observation I see."

Hearing Jonas, Ana stood straight and faced him.

"Yes, I was making sure that nothing was a miss."

"I see. But it sure is still too quiet, there was still no report from any watchers or scouts."

Jonas turned to the plains and step forward near the edge of the wall.

"Yeah it is. It's odd. If they were indeed going to attack, their forces would have already been spotted while they're moving to get here."

"It might be possible they're planning to attack from the air, but we would have already spotted their planes, also that would be risky for them because we have AA guns."

Jonas noticed Ana lower her head with a sad expression on her face. Probably she was thinking about her family or something else.

"What's wrong, Ana?"

"… Nothing… It's just that, I want this to over with."

"I understand. As do I. I'm also hoping this to end with fewest casualties as possible."

TO ALL UNITS, ENEMIES ARE SPOTTED ON THE SOUTH. THERE'S A LOT OF THEM, AND… I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE!

Suddenly someone talked on the radio, and the voice seemed confused.

After hearing that report, Ana and Jonas quickly looked over to the plains.

Ana used the scope on her sniper rifle while Jonas used his binoculars.

They were shocked in what they have seen.

"W-what are those things?" Jonas quietly asked.

There were a horde of those things.

"M-monsters?" Ana said.

Those monsters, they never have seen something like that before, nor have they heard any of those.

The monsters were terrifying, and seeing them caused a commotion and confusion. There were a lot of people around them asking everyone what could they be, but no one answered that they do.

After a few moments of contemplation, Jonas used his radio and said.

"Everyone! Prepare your arms, the enemies are coming! Get ready to fire at my command. We'll get rid of those creatures and bring this town to normal as it was before!"

Jonas didn't know how could those monsters got already this close to them despite having sentries around, but there is something he knows – it is time to fight.
