Saul opened his eyes with a groan. The last thing he remembered was blacking out after the nurses administered the drugs. His head was pounding and his mouth felt oddly dry.
Trying to stand up, he noticed that the bed was not laid flat down. But in a standing up position, his arms and legs were strapped to the bed preventing him from falling off.
"Take a deep breath, Saul," Immediately turning his head to the source of the voice. He noticed the charismatic Dr. Ambrosia. She was looking at him with an awkward smile.
"What happened and why is the bed in this position," he replied nervously.
"There was a little complication during the operation, but nothing too bad." Dr. Ambrosia replied lightly.
"What complication," this time Saul was alarmed. He started to struggle against his restraints. He noticed that his head felt like it was bursting and his mouth felt extremely dry.
"Don't worry, you should see the problem in a second." She said looking at a tablet she pulled out from nowhere and sounding carefree.
At that moment his mouth and ears started to burn. Thrashing on the hospital bed, he struggled, ripping at the restraints. He couldn't bear the pain and started to blackout.
"Just bear through it for a little bit. It'll be finished soon." Ambrosia said with a look of indifference.
Going through the weird pain, of your mouth and ears burning up was quite an experience for Saul. He eventually stopped thrashing on the hospital bed. All his energy gone all he could do was just accept the pain.
After who knows how long. The pain lessened, his brain still throbbing. But it was not as bad as it was before. Gathering enough energy, he asked with an intense cold anger.
"What did you do to me." He was furious, the pain was already bad enough. But looking at Ambrosia, smiling at him with an impassive face while witnessing his pain was sickening.
"You should be quite thankful, we don't really know what happened. But some mutation occurred when we were proceeding with your operation. If we had stopped it. You would have probably died."
"Could you not do anything about the pain." He was still angry despite knowing he would have died if they did not continue with the operation. That was the worst pain he had ever felt in his life.
"If we had administered any drug during the operation. We would not know, what could happen. It was better without the risks."
"Don't worry, you're still going to get your wings. Consequently, you might have gained a special ability for all we know." She said excitedly.
Calming his anger, he realized how irrational he was. But when he finally realized that this was not Dr. Ambrosia fault. They told him, they were using new technology. But he still went ahead with the operation.
"So when do I get my wings." He asked, forgetting his earlier outburst.
"Anytime you want, after the unexpected mutation we stopped the initial procedure for your wings," she replied still looking at the tablet.
"Okay, can we start and get this over with." He replied, a little impatient.
"This time we don't have to drug you. We'll just start the process for the growth of your wings. We will give you some drugs to numb the pain a little." Ambrosia replied.
Already giving his consent the nurses came in again to resume the process. Looking at the clock, it took about 5 minutes before he started feeling something growing from his back.
"We'll give you the drug to numb the pain. Whatever you do no matter how bad the pain is, just remember to push at your shoulder blades."
As if by magic, the moment she said those words. He felt the little embryo of his supposed wing start to push out from his shoulder blades. They had opened a little compartment behind his hospital bed for his wings.
Clenching his jaw, he struggled against his restraints once again. The pain was not as bad as the previous one. But the pain from his back was still quite painful.
Pushing out his wings were getting increasingly painful. No matter what he did the wings would not come out. Tired of the pain, he gathered every bit of energy he could muster. And with one final push, he pushed at his wings.
Immediately his wings immediately shot out. A ton of blood spurted, as his wings came out already unfurled.
"My my. Those are some big wings," Ambrosia said with a tinge of awe in her voice. His wings spanned at least 20 meters in diameter. And with its black color looked especially majestic.
Tired and with blood still spurting from his back. The pain had finally stopped, and he could finally relax. He tried talking normally, but unconsciously screamed. Hearing his scream a mental image of the surrounding area appeared in his mind.
Nevertheless, he was quite worried about what was happening. But too tired to care, Saul closed his eyes and went to sleep.
***************************
Gaining conscious, Saul was disoriented with the feeling of another limb hanging from his back. Trying to move his wings, pain shot up his back. And he let out a hiss.
"Take it easy there, your wings have just come out. You don't want to injure it already easily." A familiar voice said.
Knowing it was Dr. Ambrosia. He looked at her, she had stopped looking at her tablet. Looking at him with a detached look. Immediately any good feelings about her in his heart was crushed.
She did not do anything wrong, but the look of indifference she had while witnessing his pain was sickening. Remembering what happened before he blacked out. He asked about the weird image that appeared in his mind.
"Apparently, you might have developed echolocation it is an innate ability of a bat. You don't have to worry, there are no other side effects. For now, you should just see the limit of your ability you are quite lucky.
Not knowing how to feel about what she said. He tried to stretch out his wings. It was quite a disorienting experience. The feeling of another limb on your back. And it was also quite sensitive.
"For now you should just pull your wings back in. Everyday unfurl your wings, it should take about 5 days to get used to your wings."
Nurses filled his operation room again. Pulling him down from the hospital bed, they dressed his wounds cleaning all the blood from off his body.
"You should go and buy new clothes that have holes in the back to allow your wing to have space to breathe. That should be it, for now. Thank you for using our service." Dr. Ambrosia finished with a professional smile.
Cursing her in his mind, he nodded in he direction. And with a crutch, the hospital had given him, headed home.
