Chapter 12 - Discovery Skill

As Salvatore watched Sid's flamboyant departure he thought deeply about the many things he had learned. It seemed he was in for quite the long journey, but instead of feeling a normal sense of discouragement, or being daunted by the overwhelming level of the quest Sid had given him, Salvatore was filled with a inexhaustible amount of excitement and eagerness for the future.

With a shake of his head he returned to the present and began to take stock of his current situation while he gazed at this brand new world chocked full of a myriad of wondrous things like magic, adventure, and most importantly, unimaginably strong monsters for him to battle.

Despite his almost uncontrollable urge to immediately plunge into this unknown world, Salvatore was still a highly skilled expert with several years worth of life and death experience that strongly advised him to first obtain additional knowledge, then exploit that knowledge in order to grow stronger. Doing this was vital if he wanted to survive in this unfamiliar world. With this decided he promptly sat down deciding to examine his codex for any information Sid had neglected to inform him of.

As the holographic screen appeared in the air with a thought he examined the image of an old leather bound book inscribed with beautiful golden script which read "Codex". As he touched the cover the book responded by opening to the index page. After scrolling curiously thru the list of thousands of chapters he returned to the first page and inquisitively selected "Chapter 11 - How Skills Are Acquired".

As he studied the chapter thoroughly it appeared that his previous supposition had been correct, Sid had only provided him with the most basic of information about acquiring skills, according to this chapter, besides going to an instructor or using a skill book there was a additional third way in which a person could gain a skill.

By focusing on a particular action continuously over a long period of time it was possible to obtain a skill. However this method required years of repetitive training while focusing all of your mental energy into a clear image of the desired skill over the course of a long period of time.

Conversely, the chapter also stated that depending on the innate talent of an individual the amount of time required to learn a skill utilizing this method could vary greatly.

"Interesting" Salvatore mused, now intrigued by the concept of acquiring skills by himself. Immediately wanting to attempt this method he contemplated what skill should he attempt to acquire using this method, recalling the many RPG games he had played before deciding upon a key skill that most RPG games had in one form or another. If playing numerous RPG games had taught him one thing it was that this was a vital skill for the lone adventurer.

Picking a piece of what his [god sight] displayed as [Copavera Grass] from the ground he examined it closely, focusing the entirety of his mental facilities into a clear image of the skill he truly desired.

Several minutes later of continuously focusing and still nothing happened. Feeling somewhat foolish Salvatore paused his experiment as he reviewed his every thought as he considered what had gone wrong.

Although his codex had clearly stated that it required most people years of repetition in order to acquire a skill Salvatore deduced that this was merely because they lacked a proper concept and understanding of the skill due to inexperience which require continuous practice over time to acquire. He believed this because the codex had also noted that there were some so called "legendary" geniuses who were able to acquire a skill using this method in as little as 6 months.

So what was most important was not the actual act of repetition but the understanding and experience which was acquired from the continuous repetition of thoughts and actions over the course of time.

Trying once more, this time instead of merely visualizing the skill he focused on how the skill would function, and manner in which the magic would flow through his body and surroundings, straining every fiber of his being into manifesting the skill he desired into existence.

So focused was his concentration that great drops of sweat began to coalesce upon his face as every vein on his head bulged noticeably like enraged earthworms.

Suddenly he heard a feminine voice in his head speak as new knowledge flowed into his mind.

"DING!"

Collapsing onto the ground like a battered pile of branches and twigs, he breathed heavily before slowly sitting up, then began to massage the sides of his head in order to sooth the massive headache he had acquired from overexerting his current low level mental and physical capabilities.

"That was way more difficult than I thought it would be" he said with a sigh "however regardless of the difficulty I experienced employing this method overall it was a complete success" exclaimed Salvatore contently. "Furthermore I even managed to unlock another Class Skill."

"Now to try out this new skill" Salvatore decided proceeding to immediately with a thought activate his newly acquired skill targeting a random piece of Copavera Grass on the ground.

"[ANALYZE]!"

[Copavera Grass] - A common species of grass that grows wild in fertile regions of the world.

As a small golden window appeared before him he subconsciously gave himself a mental high-five before using it again and again on some of the nearby surroundings.

[Vorimosa Rock] - A common stone found in most regions of the world.

[Palmpasa Tree] - A common tree found in regions rich in water around the world.

[Hickitany Tree] - A common tree found in most regions of the world. Beware its leaves for they contain a weak poison.

[Stony Bark] - A King of trees. Famous for its massive size and impenetrable bark. Found in most regions of the world.

The most flourishing of trees was the Stony Bark, it truly was a king of trees, for it dominated the forest with its impressive size, which was on average over 600 feet in height and over 50 feet in diameter.

Such immensity was fully deserved by a perennial plant titled a King of trees, even the smallest of them would make the tallest of Redwoods look like a Christmas tree. For every other type of tree growing there were a hundred Stony Barks as well.

As he scanned the various fauna within the valley he armed himself with knowledge of his environments surroundings noting the plants with beneficial uses and the ones that should be avoided.
