Chapter 9 - Into The Dark Lands (IV): Balancer

NATHANIEL

Nathaniel shot forward and swung his stone sword upward, there was a draft of heavy wind generated, that lifted about a dozen dark elves off their feet and depositing on the ground in a heap of broken bones and armor. Most of his soldiers could not withstand the force of his attack, as they were thrown of their feet, putting their formation in danger and disarray.

Nathaniel clucked his tongue in annoyance as he had to be conscious of his soldiers and could not fight as freely as he wanted. He bent his knees down and pushed off with a boom that saw the earth beneath him splintering into rubble, his leap took him up almost fifteen meters into the air, and brought him straight down into the middle of the attacking dark elves. His descent had crushed three of them along with their raptors to death, it left a few other's Injured and in a very bad shape.

He inclined his body, and swung his sword with all his strength, letting the weight of the sword pull his body into a rotation as he turned a lot of the dark elf soldiers into bloody messes on the rocky ground.

From then on he made his way through their ranks killing indiscriminately as he basked in the carnage and blood shed he caused. Nathaniel descended into a haze as the lives of the dark elves was reaper by the dozens until there was nothing more than a dozen if them left.

The thing with being all powerful was that most fights lacked any sort of emotion or satisfaction, Nathaniel on the there hand had chat get a lot in the years he had spent in a land as brutal and unforgiven as hell. He would never consider doing something like this if he was still with his family, but now he was different, he was free.

Most times it was hard for his to differentiate whether this was really a game or reality, some times he thought that this was really hell and Zion was just a dream from when he was alive, that somehow he was free from the millions of people who were no living their lives as data in a system.

Nathaniel gave a heavy sigh as he looked at the fields of missing limbs and lost lives, there was pain, and there was hatred. But he did not feel anything, or to be more accurate he could not feel anything positive, he could feel hate, pride, lust, wrath, greed, all full circle of the seven sins, but none of the seven virtues.

It was almost as if something was missing and his journey east had been just an amazing excuse for him to find it. Don't get him wrong, Nathaniel loved his current life, there was nothing like a conscience to hold him back, or morals and principles. He could be as depraved and as carefree as any other person on hell, and it was all accepted.

Hell was a desolate place, but not really because of their lack of resources, the damn place was so damn big there was bound to be places that have not been explored yet, and those unexplored places were bound to have resources that will sustain hell of hundreds of thousands of years. But Hell was desolate because there was no light, there was no goodness, it was as if the very laws of nature that ruled hell was very much against the idea of a smile if it was not made when you're spilling the guts of a demon child.

It was a comfortable atmosphere, but just like every other demon there, Nathaniel kept feeling like he needed something more, something purer, better. Which was why he was so hung up on Eve, it was why they all followed her with dreams of conquest. All that demons know is bloodshed, but they were not marching for Zion just because of the land, they were marching there for the goodness, for a chance to feel different, for a chance to free themselves from the shackles from everything that could be considered bad and evil.

In hell there was no choice about being good or evil, for someone to be able to that, you needed to have the strongest of will, a will capable of going against the very laws that govern this plane of existence. You needed a will capable of going against the heavens, of fighting against the Gods, a will capable of closing their influence over your life, a will capable of sealing the heavens.

But Nathaniel had always been weak willed, he was smart enough to have realized the truth about this place, but he had not made any attempt at changing. It was as if he was stuck in a place, and it was so easy for him to move forward, but he just couldn't take that step, he was looking at an open doorway, but yet he couldn't walk through it. It was a maddening feeling, and it did not make him sad or mellow, it just made him very angry and frustrated.

Nathaniel looked at the remaining dark elves and watched as his soldiers slaughtered them. He could not help but ask himself why that was happening, this people never did anything to them, to be honest they were the invaders, and they had tried to defend their lands, though it was coming at the expense of his life and the life of his soldiers. Some morally bound people will tell you that the method they used was too brutal and bloody, but Nathaniel knew he would do the same, especially if he had something to protect.

He could see it clearly now, it was like a circle, once one person sowed negativity, it will take root in the heart of the person he had sowed that negativity into. And then it would spread from one person to another, growing and fostering, until all that was left my to see is a great mass of evil and badness that will keep on spreading fro generations to generations.

It was now that Nathaniel realized that his life here was the same as back on earth, he had gone with the flow, letting nature and very laws of society drive and dictate his character.

He thought he was unique, but he now knew it was a lie, because much like the billions of people who lived on the same planet with him, he had no control over his destiny, he was just like all of them driven every which way back the flow of fate, chance and destiny without any say or choice.

But when he went to Zion, the same thing was happening to him, he was swept up by events he had no control over, but in the process he learned something, to be a druid he had to truly understand balance.

He had to know the difference between fire and water, earth and air, life and death, black and white, and above all good an evil. And when all that is said and done, he had to place himself right in the middle, neither leaning towards one or the other. It was in that center would he really have the opportunity to take control of his own destiny, he was not sure about fate. But he would be able to decide with his own heart, how he wanted his life to go.

"Stop! That's enough!"

His soldiers were shocked by his sudden order. It was no secret that he never left a demon, demoness, or youngling alive when ever he decided to attack, so why was he stopping, maybe he wanted to complete the deed himself. But whatever the answer, none of them were prepared for the words that came out of his mouth at that moment, Even Nathaniel himself was not prepared.

"That's enough killing for today, stop it."

His soldiers looked at their selves in confusion, they might not have been the best his army had to offer, but they all knew, if not by bearing witness, but by reputation how dangerous and ruthless a man he was, this was an entirely different side to him that they had never seen before.

"Gather what's left of the dark elves and render help to them, bind their wounds, and feed them. We shall bury their dead along with our, or if they have different customs we shall accord it to the dead. Now move."

As soon he finished speaking his body shook fiercely as if an explosion had happened within him. He stumbled back, and his sword fell from his hand with a bang, Vane appeared behind him almost immediately, supported him before he could fall to the ground.

"My lord! Are you alright!, where are you hurt!, Who dares! Attack my master from the shadows!. Come out and fight with honor you cowards!"

It was obvious that Vane was now mad beyond any reasonable doubt, in his own demon like way, this Anansi demon had great affection for his lord and master. At that thought Nathaniel felt a trace of warmth flow through his chest, and then he was startled, shocked and very much terrified. Warmth?

And then he felt it, it was faint at first, then it began to pound heavily and with a force he had not heard in the five years he had spent here. His heart was beating again, and it was beating just as strongly as ever.

Nathaniel did not know how to address this current issue, he had no idea what might happen now, but he knew he was a leader, and for a race as carnage inclined as demons, seeing their leader show a moment of weakness would be very unpleasant to them.

Nathaniel looked up at all of them, he had given them orders, but they had all stopped what they were doing once they saw him stumble. This was the weakest combination of troops in his army, they were put together for the image of ferociousness they portrayed, and not for their strength on the battlefield, but none the less these demons were his, they belonged to him, a d they followed him and expected him to lead them to a better place, a better future.

Nathaniel felt pride unlike anything he had ever felt since he came to hell, he might have changed, but he had achieved a lot. He turned back to them with the fire of the sun burning behind his eyes.

"What are you doing?, did I not just give you orders to carry out."

His voice thundered out, but this time there was a difference to it, many of them identified it as weakness left behind by whatever might have prompted him to drop his sword and almost fall, however those among them who were more sensitive knew it was not weakness, but an entirely new dimension of power, even they could not understand it, or knew what it was for, but it was there, and it left their infernal blood boiling for action.

Nathaniel bent down to pick his sword from the ground, the feeling he got from it this time was very different from the norm, before it was just a huge bulky sword he swung around for the amount of damage it could deal, but now it felt heavier, stronger...alive. With just a thought the sword rapidly shrunk until it was a meter long. But this sword was unusual, it looked like a normal double edge sword, but it only had one sharp edge, and the other side was blunt.

At the middle of the sword, there was a groove that had etchings and symbols that Nathaniel could not even begin to understand. The entire blade itself was pitch black, and the it had no hand guard, its handle was as much a part of the blade as the blade was a part of the handle. It could be considered a saber, but sabers were curved, and this one was as straight as they came. And at that moment for the first time in five years, the system activated to show him the stats of the sword.
