Chapter 2 - Being Average Isn't That Bad

Greenhaven Planet, Year 4005 on the Imperial Calendar, Month of the Jester.

Wind was average. Everything about him was average; his looks were average, his personality average, and his talent average. He lived his life in the village loved but also ignored by his parents, his older more talented more handsome brother taking his attention.

His brother was strong, powerful with pulsing muscles and a classically handsome face. Wind did not have any muscles.

Summer was incredibly hot on Greenhaven more than any other of the planets in the Empire. Work was impossible unless if it was done indoors so indoor plants were cultivated in unique rooms in the houses of the people of Greenhaven.

These rooms were small rooms filled with tiny mushrooms. Some of these mushrooms were tall, some were thin and some curved around the small cave. Wind was in one of the rooms. He appreciated the quiet, it let him read, or think, or what he was usually doing nothing. Great mushrooms danced around Wind as he sat there. He liked looking at them move around in a strange dance.

The grunts of the family Aether Generator are occasionally making noises. Small bits of Aether particles floated down from a rudimentary nozzle in the room. The mushrooms would only grow with Aether energy to supply them, this, in turn, helped feed the family and the animals in the household. These mushrooms were the lifeblood of the whole family.

Wind opened his eyes; the room smelled of fresh dirt with a hint of spring water. Wind was bored, everyone in the family was doing something. His brother was talking to his girlfriend, his mother was feeding the animals, and his father was training his body for the winter. All in all, he had nothing to do on a summer day.

He had one more week until the ceremony. Awakening of the martial spirit the only way to be a real power in the world. Some people had ordinary spirits, things such as books, swords, fire. If you had one of these common objects, the martial spirit would only increase their aptitude for these subjects. For books maybe their reading speed would go up and for swords, they might learn them better.

Every once in a while though, the spirits would be extraordinary. Mythical beasts such as the Pheonix, great ancient men who could guide their wielder to power, but these were rare, and not many had one. Martial spirits are not the only path though, the ability of the flesh, the insight of the soul, grand magic, contacting the souls of objects thousands of powers.

Most martial spirits were a combination or a representation of the parent's martial spirits. If a parent had a tiger for a martial spirit their children had a chance of inheriting that tiger and so on. All martial spirits worked through the bloodline when beings hit a certain amount of power, skill or knowledge they can transmit their magical powers to their descendants.

Wind's parents had weak martial spirits. Winds dad had a blue daisy for a martial spirit. The only noticeable advantage to this was that Winds dad would sometimes summon it for Wind when he was little. Wind's moms was a ball of light. These light balls called by their mother lit the house that they lived in. Wind's brother didn't have a martial spirit. When the bloodletting ceremony awoke his martial spirit, nothing came up, no ethereal representation, no falling flower, no bright image. Nobody cared though, not having a martial spirit mattered not in the world plenty of merchants, sect leaders, and soulsmiths had none.

Unbeknownst to Wind, something was awakening right below the surface. Warm energy pulsated below Wind climbing its way through the dirt and finally reaching the room he was located in. He didn't notice anything at first but then the room started getting hotter, and hotter, and hotter until Wind started to sweat. And all at once the earth caved in and in the center of the room was a hilt. Wind only had time to get up and start to run to the door. The sword pulsated some warm energy, some terrible warm energy, warm energy that wanted to devour him, the universe, and all the laws inside of it.

Wind stared at the sword. The sword stared back with invisible eyes. He wanted to touch the sword. He wanted to grab the sword. Something inside of him though told him, this is dangerous, this can kill, you don't want to touch this. But something gutteral, something deep inside him grasped his legs and started to move forward. Slow at first but faster and faster until he broke into a run. He grasped the sword. And a voice spoke into his mind, deep and ancient something from generations long past.

"Wait shhh shut up someones coming" Another voice sounded in his mind.

"Oh god not another person. You got control of the last one and I had to stay in the sword for a thousand years." The other voice said this one lighter and more childlike.

"You deserved it after what you did to the children back in the other master," The deep voice said.

"Shut up our new guy is picking us up." The child said again.

"What the..." Wind said and the deep voice interrupted.

"Ah yes let's leave this sword already," The deep voice said.

"Couldn't agree more." Two lights started rushing from the blade of the sword and towards Wind's hand. Wind tried to let go but it was to late the lights had already gotten into his arm. They felt like two squirming worms inching into his arm, Wind started to panic when they reached his brain and he blacked out.
