Chapter 23 - Sleep

After some more minutes, Odelia finally gave up. The bone was too cunning and vicious! It even made her jaws ache...

Burying the bone in the ground, and stomping a couple of times on its grave, she triumphantly walked back to their wagon to get some sleep.

In the meantime, the two men watched in admiration when Foo put the final bone in his mouth and swallowed. After absentmindedly searching around on the now empty ground with his hand, he finally noticed that the meat was gone.

"Hey! Who ate all the meat!" He exclaimed, and turned to look at the two gaping men besides him.

After a quick glance around the camp, and seeing their awkward expressions as a response to his question, he quickly put together the facts. "So it was that Odelia, huh? Impressive that she could eat so much. Poor thing, must have been starved!" She was the prime suspect, as she had already escaped from the crime scene.

Deciding to not push the matter further, as it was not her fault for being so hungry, he thanked Abner: "Thank you! That was quite tasty; freshly hunted game in a forest sure have its own charm."

Speechless at this shamelessness, Abner could only force himself to utter: "Ah, great that you enjoyed it."

Yorick could only shake his head and walk towards the wagon, while asking Foo: "We are going to sleep now, are you coming too?"

After considering, Foo realized that he was not sleepy at all. Ever since he came to this world, he had not felt the tiniest bit of sleepiness. There was only the mental exhaustion that always came from interacting with the system. Just thinking on that devious system gave him a headache.

However, Foo had been able to avoid any more trouble with the system for quite some time now, so he had no desire at all to go to sleep. Suddenly Foo felt a shiver down his spine. ``Not good! Such dangerous thoughts! I better not have jinxed me! I can feel the system just sneaking around and waiting for me to lower my guard!``

Wiping of some cold sweat, Foo replied: "Nah, I think I take the night watch."

Surprised, Abner asked: "Are you sure? There really is no need to; we warrior apprentices will take the night watch in shifts, as part of our training. There will not be any lacking manpower, so you wizards should just have a good sleep. In fact, as wizards depend quite a lot on their mental alertness, it is best if they sleep whenever possible during travel, to be able to assist in case of need. Of course, that is unless the wizard have supreme detection spells that can help him with the monitoring of surroundings, but most of those skills can be set to run even during sleep."

Smiling wryly, Foo answered: "Yes, I am sure. I am not feeling sleepy at all."

Yorick shrugged his shoulders with a yawn, and went into the wagon to sleep.

In the night, Foo and Abner sat and watched over the camp, occasionally glancing on the warrior apprentices' night shift, that were silently doing sword exercises. The fact that Abner did not join them might speak of why he was looked down upon; someone so lazy would not be able to win the respect of hardworking warriors.

Calming down his mind, Foo did for a first time in this world feel a sense of tranquility. It was soothing for the soul to be able to sit down in the forest and enjoy the nature.

As such, the time passed by, uneventfully.
