"I'm sorry to tell you this, but your daughter's heart is failing," said the doctor, giving my parents an unemotional look. 

"Is there anything we can do," replied my mother, in hopes of finding a glimpse of hope. 

"At this time, no," replied the doctor, causing the shimmer in my mother's eyes to disappear. "We can only observe her situation."

Tears rolled down her eyes as Mom looked back at me before rushing out of the room. I understood what the doctor said and somehow seemed unfazed that years of life could disappear in an instant.
