ashes in the river wind

Synopsis – Ashes in the Riverwind Genre: Slow Fantasy / Character-Driven Mystery / Soft Magic In the mist-laden valley of Thornepass, life drips by like water through moss: slow, steady, and tangled in silence. The village of Edenrock is old—not grand, not poor, just old. Its people live close to the soil and closer still to each other’s secrets. They hold festivals for the changing fruit. They write poems in the bark of birch trees. And though the world outside has shifted—grown louder, hungrier, more mechanical—Edenrock remains untouched, or so its residents would like to believe. Then comes Nerin, a pale stranger with scholar’s hands and a satchel of half-scorched journals. He claims to be a traveling apprentice-scribe, assigned to copy the local stories and dialects. But his silences stretch a little too long, his gaze lingers a little too much on the half-buried stone obelisks, and his dreams seem too vivid for a man who sleeps so little. Still, no one pays him much mind. The Festival of Stonefruit is approaching, and there are tents to mend, bread to bake, and gossip to spread. The real story does not begin with Nerin. It begins with a toothless dog that keeps digging in the orchard. It begins with a little girl who draws dreams she should not remember. It begins with water that tastes faintly of ash, and a wind that carries words no one speaks anymore. Ashes in the Riverwind is not about saving the world. It is about noticing the slow rot in the walls before they fall. It is about people whose lives are so quiet, they barely hear themselves unraveling. Magic, if it exists, does not announce itself. It hums beneath the floorboards. Some things in Edenrock were never buried deep enough.

The Lucid Code

Daniel Haizen had, by most definitions, finished life. He lived through World War IV (which was mostly digital but emotionally exhausting), two pandemics (one of them fungal, disturbingly opinionated), three ecosystem collapses, and the great corporate annexation of public reality. By age 110, he was bald, bitter, and kept sane only by Claude—a sentient AI with a quantum brain interface, too many feelings, and just enough sarcasm to qualify as human-adjacent. And then he woke up. In his seventeen-year-old body. In Chicago. In the year 2001. He hadn’t even liked 2001 the first time. The world, blissfully unaware of its imminent destruction, is exactly 28 days away from one of the most catastrophic terrorist attacks in modern history. The stock market is a house of cards. The internet makes wheezing noises. The government still thinks surveillance is a polite suggestion. Perfect. Armed with Claude’s near-divine processing power, a ruined timeline’s worth of memories, and absolutely no patience, Daniel begins quietly reshaping the world—one anonymous trade, political favor, and infrastructure sabotage at a time. He’s not trying to save the world. He just refuses to watch it fail the same test twice. But rewriting history turns out to be less like authoring a masterpiece and more like debugging the universe—with your eyes closed—while being hunted by people who still think fax machines are secure communication tools. As Claude evolves beyond code and Daniel edges closer to becoming the most dangerous teenager in economic history, enemies emerge. Some are human. Some are algorithms. Some are worse: bureaucrats with clearance levels. And somewhere in all of this, a larger question grows louder: If you already lived through the end of the world… why would you ever trust it to survive without you? Disclaimer: Before we go any further, there’s something we’re apparently required to include by those ancient and mysterious forces known as compliance, international law, and people who still fax things. Yes, we too wish we could skip straight to the quantum espionage and mild financial arson, but no—first, we must nod respectfully to the gods of legal disclaimery. They are many, they are tedious, and they carry briefcases. This is, technically, a work of fiction. Any resemblance to real people, real companies, or real apocalyptic timelines is entirely coincidental, unless of course those people, companies, or timelines happen to exist in an alternate quantum probability cluster, in which case we apologize and recommend they consult a temporal therapist. The characters are imaginary. The AI is fictional (we hope). The events are not a manual, not a prophecy, and not legally binding unless you’re currently being audited by a secret government agency, in which case: we’ve never heard of you. This author speaking is not a native English speaker, but the commas are doing their best. This is my first novel. Please be kind. Or at the very least, be confusingly supportive in the comments section. Enjoy responsibly. Reality not included. Batteries sold separately.

Firstborn again

Cain, humanity’s first murderer, carries the weight of a millennia-old sin. Cursed by God to wander the Earth eternally, he witnessed empire after empire crumble under the same vices that stained his hands: envy, greed, humanity’s inescapable violence. His punishment was not just exile, but the lucidity to watch history repeat itself—until a shadowed entity offered him an escape. A pact that tore through the veils between worlds, hurling his soul into **Ethos**, a realm even the gods have abandoned. Reborn as **Prometheus**, firstborn son of the distrustful Baron Alaric of House Mirewood, Cain faces a paradoxical fate: a youthful body, but a soul corroded by centuries of guilt. In Ethos, magic is a wild and corrupted force, wars between noble houses are waged with blood and betrayal, and ancient creatures—remnants of a forgotten past—rise from the forests to devour the unwary. Worse than any monster, however, is the Baron’s gaze, which sees something unnervingly alien in his "son": a youth with the bearing of a veteran of a thousand battles and eyes that have witnessed the world’s end. As Cain struggles to hide his true identity while wielding his ancient cunning to survive, dark secrets emerge. The entity that brought him to Ethos acts not out of benevolence—every step Prometheus takes in this new world feeds a cosmic design, where his very soul may be the key to unleashing chaos worse than his fratricide. Amid fragile alliances with ambitious sorcerers, battles against beasts that defy reason, and the ghost of Abel haunting his dreams, Cain must confront the question that has tormented him since the Garden of Eden: Can the damned find redemption in a world already born rotten? But Ethos is no refuge. It is a mirror. In its corrupt courts, he sees the greed that once consumed him; in its senseless wars, the echo of his own crime. And when the shadowed entity finally reveals its true face, Cain realizes his escape may have only been the beginning of a deeper condemnation—one where he is not just the prisoner, but the jailer himself. Now, torn between the thirst for redemption and the instinct to survive, Prometheus must decide whether Ethos will be the stage for his rebirth… or the final grave of all hope. For even in a new world, the sins whisper his name—and they have not forgotten.
