Ilarion Lavski, an eccentric millionaire, in the sixth decade of his life, in the dawn of the communist revolution, meets a young and ambitious journalist in unusual circumstances; he finds her unconscious in the park near his villa. Thrilled by her beauty he offers her a job as his personal secretary and assistant with an intention to keep her by his side.
Accepting the job offered, Rakita Rodenska tries to forget the unsuccessful affair with doctor Saitski.
The affection that is born in her towards her employer even more nourishes his wish to tie her to himself, he manages in this in exile, after they leave the country in a hurry the day before the bloody communist revolution.
Their children are born abroad. Two twins. Their happiness is blurred when they find out that one of them is ill with epilepsy and neural muscular atrophy. Different from Emmanuel, the sick twin, the other son, Venjamin, shows intelligence above the average.
The long years of expatriate life are finished with the collapse of the communist system, after the sudden death of the communist dictator.
The family decides to come back to the fatherland. The father and the son prodigy leave as advance.
Not long after their return to the old family house, they are visited by their relative, Solomon Pavski, theatrical director and actor. By the way, Pavski discovers that Ilarion Lavski is the author of the text he had been preparing for a theater play. On his way home he forgets his book.
Tomorrow, on his way to the airport to get his family, Lavski goes to Pavski to return his book. He does not find him home, but he is met by his wife, Alexandra Pavski.
