Malia has to make a choice: either let the curse into herself, or risk losing her father. She chooses to let it in, and the mark of the cursed is transferred to her from her father. A young girl of fifteen, bearing a curse because of her father's actions, and the only way to lift the curse is to kill the entire bloodline of the Lunate family.
