You see ray had posssesd great affinity for shadow control and the assassins could use it but inorder to get ray to obey they had to erase all his memories and hypnotized him into thinking he is an elite weapon only available to the Assassins. They made him believe that he was the son of the asassin master and had to do anything and everything to carry out their order. That was the rise of SHADE, the most ruthless asassin known to mankind.
