After two years, she becomes of age and returns to her ancestral home far away, and takes up business, leaving her brother with their uncle. A short time later and somewhat successful in her ventures, she finds herself in trouble again. Meiwan and her household are framed for a capital offense, and in self protection, fights for her life making, enemies with the court. In attempts to keep her from causing more trouble, the emperor sends her brother, Zhanyi, to be a hostage in the enemy country. Meiwan, forced, remains quiet for some time, all the while building her strength to regain her brother's freedom. Finally stong enough after a long while, Meiwan strikes a deal with the emperor for Zhanyi's release. However, through scheming and plotting done by a silent third party, she learns that her brother will not be returning.
