This novel is set in a fictional era, with a background somewhat similar to China during World War II, where it is invaded by the Japanese. The main characters are a couple of homosexuals who meet and fall in love. One leads soldiers in resisting the invaders, while the other fights to protect cultural relics.

It's more about how things work and what you can do with them than about power or revenge. The rhythm might be a bit slow for some but that is the idea.
