They would be essentially competing against 900 other people that have been given similar offers from other worlds without Gods throughout the universe. The first 10 to reach a high enough level to ascend to godhood would be the victors of the trial. Everyone else would either return a failure or die during the trial. Seeing this as his chance to obtain his lifelong dream, he more than happily accepted.
