So, uh… I think my family heirloom might be haunted? I just turned 18, and my dad finally gave me this old locket that's been passed down in my family. It just has some weird engraving about making people leave after a year (which, yeah, tracks, ‘cause our maids never stay long). I thought it was just some dumb tradition. Then this morning, I was messing with it in my bed to take a morning nap, and suddenly, it disappeared. Next thing I know, some woman’s voice comes out of nowhere, and she’s holding it like she just plucked it off my neck. I freaked out, told her to leave, and she just laughed and disappeared. Classification only meant shit if you walked back out of the gate. Otherwise, shut your mouth and listen to those with more experience. They determined who made it out alive or not. But Kellen was tired now. He had gotten everything out of his system, and the fast paced life on the front lines didn’t suit him anymore. Now, he wanted to go home, buy a house, maybe find a nice man to settle down with, and live a normal life. All the while, the yellow eyes he’d met on the front lines haunted him, no matter how much he tried to forget about them. Especially since the Esper they were attached to refused to let him go.

This is a novel about a vampire protagonist that just wants to read, but is obliged by the insistence of his maid to leave his old castle and find his place in the world.
