Ciel is an esper from the now destroyed last stronghold of humanity, Bastion City. The city had survived long past the dreaded Judgment Day, when eternal flames suddenly engulfed the earth and the ghastly fallen appeared. Such an event served as a catalyst for a surge in the supernatural and mystical activities and now monsters and aberrations alike infest the world, morphing into yet another threat which humanity must combat in order to survive within their new reality. Two years after its destruction, Ciel, along with the last of humanity, find themselves beaten and all but defeated.
