Maturing is accepting that you can't be friends with the person you once loved because every time they talk to you, you're reminded that they chose not to be something more—and that it will never happen. It's hard to process because you used to talk to them with the hope that one day it would become a reality, that you'd be together in a relationship.
Looking at what you've always wanted with that person becomes impossible because every time, you hurt yourself more and more, as being friends makes you love that person even more—but not as a friend.
