Jansen loaded another shell. The second machine gun position was obliterated, while just then, two three-man mortar teams had just set the base plates for the mortars, but hadn't mounted them yet.
At the sound of the third cannon, the two crews had completed the assembly of the mortars and were frantically cranking the handles to adjust the muzzle.
By the fourth cannon shot, one machine gun position was blasted away, and at that point, the other two mortar teams finally fired their mortars.
While Nate led his men and was still not within five hundred meters of the enemy's kill line, six machine gun positions had already been taken out. Nate knew Tommy was an excellent gunner, but he couldn't help turning his head to glance at the mortar positions.
