A Jin recently entered the bottleneck period because of his creations. He wasn't in the best place. His band-mates suggested that he go out and get some air. Maybe he'd get some inspiration. Don't be impatient, don't take on too much stress. Keep the passion for music.
And so, since he wasn't performing now, A Jin slung his guitar on his back and took off on a walk around Chu Hua city.
During these days, A Jin played in underground passages and some squares, and even slept in the parks again. It was as if he returned to the days as a travelling artist. He found his impatient mood gradually calming down.
Today, A Jin was originally going to sing at center square. In fact, in many of the large-scale plazas in Chu Hua city had numerous talented young people performing at night. In the past two days, A Jin had already encountered many of these artists in his previous chosen performance spots. He gained a lot just by communicating with them. But never did he expect, that he would see Zheng Tan of all people here.
Regarding Zheng Tan, A Jin felt eternally grateful, and there was also a sense of awe that he couldn't really explain. Sometimes A Jin felt that the entire situation was beyond incredible. It was only a cat, but it had such a large effect on both him and his band mates. If there wasn't this cat in the beginning, he didn't know where him and his band-mates could even go. He couldn't imagine. At that point in time, he was ready to give up. So, regarding this cat, A Jin and his band-mates had always been grateful, and this reflected in their black cat band logo.
When it came to awe, perhaps, it was because Zheng Tan was the only wild card that he had encountered among all cats. After all, this cat was even allowed to lick this face of the boss of the night tower, Ye Hao.
A Jin did not know where Zheng Tan lived. In fact, he was nowhere close to even getting a grasp on this cat. He only knew that this cat was familiar with several "big players" and every time Zheng Tan would be with these "big players" at the Night Tower. So, when he first saw Zheng Tan, A Jin was sure and had to take another look to match up the cat he saw in front of him with the one he had set as his band logo. Perhaps, there was no other cat that would be brave enough to be in such a location. And within this type of atmosphere, this cat was calmly bullying a blind old man.
"Black Charcoal!" A Jin called out. Seeing Zheng Tan, A Jin was ecstatic. This was the guiding star of their band.
Zheng Tan had just pulled out a strand of the old man's beard hair and saw the old man's face give a slight twitch. So, he prepared to pull out a few more strands. He wanted to know how long this old man could keep the act up for. Then out of nowhere, he heard someone suddenly call his name.
Idiot! Why are you calling my name?!
Zheng Tan cursed out in his head.
When he was messing around, it was completely taboo to give out any personal information. This was the first time he had come to this area and no one here knew who he was. He could play around and just get up and leave. No one should be able to find him. But know that A Jin had directly called out his name.
Zheng Tan pondered for a moment. Should he just act as if they mistook his identify?
Just as he was thinking about this, Zheng Tan looked up at the old man who sat on top the small chair. And found that the old man had finally opened up his eyes. His eyeball was a cloudy grey-white and it looked towards Zheng Tan's area. This scared Zheng Tan into leaping back a few steps. It wasn't that Zheng Tan was a coward. It was simply that he was surprised. Messing with the old man for that long didn't managed to get him to open his eyes. And now he decided to suddenly open them.
However, it seemed the old man truly was blind.
The old man not only opened his eyes, he even started to move.
When the old man started to move, A Jin rushed forwards. Scared that the old man would strike at Zheng Tan with his walking staff. The surrounding vendors were all wondering how the old man would act against this cat. Normally, this old man didn't talk much and didn't start conversations with the people there either. He wouldn't be involved in any disputes, but that was because no one started an altercation with him. But with the current situation, this cat was definitely dead.
Even Zheng Tan thought that he would be on the receiving end of a lesson. He still had a stand of the old man's beard in his claws too. So he prepared himself to get the hell out of there.
But no one would have expected this old moved a little simply to adjust his seated position, picked the Er Hu up and began to play.
Zheng Tan saw that old granny from Papa Jiao's village playing the Er Hu before. Listening to this old man playing, he didn't think it was any how inferior to the skills of the old woman. What more, this old man was also blind, that was pretty difficult. At the same time, Zheng Tan had to admit that this old man had a terrific temper. After getting his beard pulled, this guy was still in the mood to play the Er Hu.
Although A Jin wasn't to familiar with the Er Hu, but he was very sensitive to music. A Jin didn't think the old was in any form angry. More like when he listened to the music, he felt that the old was in a terrific mood. A lot of people played the Er Hu, but most played with a slight chill in their music. When the old man played, he felt himself being filled with warmth from the tune. Unconsciously, the tension that ran throughout his body gradually loosened up.
A Jin judged the old man's mood through the Er Hu's tune. And Zheng Tan, recognizing with his instinct that the old man didn't have a malicious intent, decided to stop messing around with the blind old man, especially since the old man wasn't going to go after him. What more, A Jin was here. If he decided to make anymore more moves, all this information would be leaked out by this idiot.
Since he wasn't going to bully the old man anymore, Zheng Tan simply sat on the side listening to the old man play the Er Hu. A Jin wasn't going to be leaving anytime soon either. He stood by Zheng Tan and leaned against the railing to listen to the old man play.
A Jin clearly understood that this old man was a master at the Er Hu, comparable to the professional teachers at music academies. Listening on this would do him some good to help with his creativity. Another point was that A Jin had listened to a lot of Er Hu songs, but the songs that this old man a played were unheard of before. At the same time, he didn't want to interrupt to ask. So he decided to quietly stand there to continue observing.
The nearby vendors were already used to the old man's playing. Seeing as it didn't get too busy, they continued to manage their own stalls. To them, even the cat was no longer interesting anymore.
Speaking about money, Zheng Tan now understand how there was so much money in the old man's wooden box. He played the Er Hu so well. Passersby wanted to listen, and they liked to listen. With the additional compassion they had for the old man, the donation amount did increase. Although most of it was spare change, the amount received wasn't bad and accumulated about a full day, it would become a substantial amount. To an old man, this was more than enough for simple living expenses. With the extra amount, he could use it for other life enjoyment.
Actually, the people that made donations increased from the usual amount. A factor of it was due to Zheng Tan. This is why some street artists liked to bring along children or animals.
Seeing as the sky started to darken, Zheng Tan got up and started in the direction to pick up You Zi.
"Hm? Black Charcoal are you ready to leave?" A Jin was still immersed in the tunes of the Er Hu. Once the sounds from the Er Hu stopped, did he finally notice the cat that was once beside him, had made its way to the stairs, readying to leave the overpass.
Readjusting his guitar on his back, he followed after the cat. He decided to walk a distance with Zheng Tan. He didn't have anywhere specific to go to anyways. And he was very curious as to where Zheng Tan resided. Where did this cat live? What type of area did he live in? Why would he come independently to such an area?
Zheng Tan knew that A Jin followed him, but he decided to heed him no attention.
Just as they bypassed a small street vendor, A Jin called out to Zheng Tan. "Black Charcoal, let me get you a chicken fillet." A Jin recalled that this cat had a pretty wide food selection.
This was a form of thanks. It wasn't common that he'd get to see Zheng Tan. In the past, when A Jin managed to see Zheng Tan, it was when he was with Wei Ling, Ye Hao and the rest of the crew. A Jin was comfortable intruding amoung all of them.
Speaking about meat, Zheng Tan was truly a little hungry. He wasn't in a rush anyways, and there was still another half an hour before You Zi was off school. Getting a quick bite before leaving was definitely feasible.
Seeing Zheng Tan stopping, A Jin understood it as agreeing. He happily walked to the front of the vendor.
"I'll get two…..."
Before finishing his sentence, A Jin stopped cold. He searched around his pocket and pat down his pant pockets. After fishing around for a while, he turned towards Zheng Tan with a look of dismay.
"Black Charcoal, have you seen my wallet and phone?"
Zheng Tan: "..." Idiot! You didn't even realize that your wallet and phone got stolen!
On the other side of the overpass, after Zheng Tan and A Jin had left, the old man stopped playing the Er Hu. He simply sat there quietly. He closed his eyes and returned to his prior state all the way till sunset. The old man folded up his stool and placed it in the wooden box full of donations. The wooden box wasn't big, but it was able to just accommodate the folded wooden stool. The old man untied the big black umbrella he had tied to the railing. The old man went about tidying everything up at a regular pace. Every movement wasn't fast, but it was executed smoothly. The surrounding people didn't find this surprising. If anyone had to repeat the same actions day after day, they would become equally as good.
For a blind person, there was no real difference between night and day. But everyday, this old man would follow the same routine. With the rising of the sun he would appear, and he would disappear as the sun set. And his position on the bridge was always the same. It was never changing, there was never a vendor would come to sell on the overpass that would ever steal his spot. Even more, the area around him would always be free. Even when an abundance of vendors came to set up stalls on the overpass, they would rather squeeze tightly together, keeping the space around the old man free.
If a new vendor appeared on the overpass, they would be told not to take the old man's spot. And, when the old man left, even if business was still going well for the other vendors, they would similarly quickly pack up and leave. If they were going to continue to sell, they would relocate to another area. If the old man did not show up on a certain day. The vendors would avoid setting up stalls there as well. They would choose to sell at another area, until the old man appeared on the overpass.
This was a rule that the vendors had come to understand over a long period of time. When the old man is here, no regulators would come here with fines. This was one of the reasons why people here had a special attitude towards the old man.
The other reason…...this was something the vendors had only heard of and never seen with their own eyes. It wasn't certain. In any case, they would never go up to directly offend the blind old man. Sometimes, the fruit and other food vendors would sometimes take a few of their items to the old man, but they way they gave it didn't at all indicate charity. Instead, it was intended with caution.
The old man picked up his walking cane and casually walked down the pedestrian path. That pair of cloudy grey-white eyes didn't flicker open. If he opened them, most likely he'd scare a few pedestrians.
The sky quickly darkened, and the neon light started to light up. People who were indulging in night life laughed and talked as they walked past the old man. As they walked past, they looked at the old man in sympathy and contempt. This wasn't specifically for the old man, but to others that were blind like the old man.
Suddenly, someone charged in from behind, grabbed the wooden box from the old man's hands and ran. This guy had walked across the overpass in the evening and saw the money in the old wooden box. At that time, there were too many people and it wasn't easy to not cause a scene. He wasn't too bothered, he would have better loots. Now as he saw it in front of him, if he didn't make a move, it would be for nought. However he spun it, there was still probably a few hundred dollars in that box.
As the people around the old man saw the scene unfold, most people chose to mind their own business, the energetic youth seemed to want to get involved. But within the blink of an eye, the thief disappeared into the moving crowd. They could only sympathize with the blind old man.
Quite different from the surrounding people, the old man had a serene look. He didn't seem to express any anger or sadness from getting his wooden box stolen. When his box was stolen, he stopped for a moment before continuing to walk forwards. It was as if he didn't even hear the surrounding conversations.
After moving forwards for a period of time, he turned into a narrow and long alley without any lights. In the night, the noisiness of the city seemed to retract. The bustling street and the current alley almost seemed like two completely different streets.
The old man still continued his leisurely walk forwards. A distance not too far off, someone sat on the side. After seeing the old man, that man instantly rose and rushed forwards. He dropped to his knees in front of the old man.
This person was the one who had just stolen the old man's wooden box. At this time, his embarrassment was obvious. His face was beaten and bruised. His body was probably laced with other injuries. Kneeling in front of the old man, he raised the box with both hands. He shook like a sifter and barely managed to spit out his words.
小的... 有...
"This this this…...this one…...new comer....did…...did not recognize…..."
The old man didn't stop in his steps because of the man who stood in front of him. He still showed a plain and unwavering expression and didn't say a word. He reached for the wooden box and continued walking forwards. He left the person who hadn't finished speaking and continued to shake on the ground.
At this time, after finishing his dinner, Zheng Tan who had been commanded to stay indoor laid on the sofa and accompanied Mama Jiao to watch her soap operas. He wondered if he should make another visit to the overpass to grab at the blind old man's beard simply to test the old man's patience.
