The see-through glass drawer vibrated, as his phone was rang, but once Jacob was deep into his sleep, only he could wake himself up. He always overworked himself with the affairs of the company, having little or no time for rest, so whatever opportunity he got to sleep, he hugged it tight like he would die if he lets go.
"Jacob! Jacob! Jacob!" Mrs. Nelson screamed running into the master house. "Where is my son?" She asked in a loud voice shaking the poor cook who had come out of the kitchen to find out what was going on and soon, everyone else was awake.
She ran into Jacob's room and forced the door open, causing it to make a loud sound across the wall. It was so loud that it shook Jacob out of his sleep.
"Jeez, mom! What's going on?" Jake asked still trying to get the sleep out of his eyes.
"Calm down! Calm down! Take deep breaths! Yes, that would do it!" Mrs. Nelson kept saying to herself trying to calm her nerves.
"What is the problem mother?" Jacob exclaimed. "You are scaring me mother. Just say what it is!"
"Don't you dare raise your voice at me, young man! I didn't raise you to shout at a woman."
"Well, you watch me when I do it to Maria and I don't see you reprimanding me then so...?"
"Oh zip it, young man! This is not a time to argue, we would address this issue some other time. (Her nerves are a bit calm and much more relaxed now.) Remember you told me you didn't meet Maria when you came back. Well, I hope it's not what I think it is, but detective Trevor, my friend back in college, just gave me a call."
Jacob was still trying to figure out where all of this was heading and the connection between the whole story.
From Maria to her college sweetheart, nothing was making any sense to him.
"Mom could you please, just tell me exactly what the matter is because I would be a liar if I said I understood anything from what you just said."
"Well, I was worried when you told me Maria wasn't home because I know that it was out of character for Maria to act that way. So I gave Trevor a call and I told him about it.
Just in passing when we were having a conversation about old times. He said he was going to keep me posted."
Things were making sense gradually to Jacob. He saw where his mom was heading, but he still wanted to believe she won't go down that path.
"He called me just now, saying he had been trying to get to you."
Jacob picked up his phone and saw four missed calls. There was an incident in the past that led Jacob into exchanging contacts with Trevor.
"You know how I get all jumpy and considering my age, he didn't want me getting a heart attack due to an increase in my blood pressure, so he called you, but you weren't picking up and he was left with no other choice than to call me."
"This is getting too long now, get straight to the point."
"He said...he said...a pregnant woman...was pulled out from the river close to the place where Maria always went for ice cream."
Before anyone else could react to the news, Jonas fell to the ground, he blamed himself for it. If only he had insisted on bringing her home if he only he didn't let greed get in his way. He knew she didn't know her way around, plus she was with a child.
He sniffed his nose and wiped it with the back of his palm. "I should have known today would be like this when I had that dream last night." He said to himself still sniffing his nose. Just when he thought he had escaped death, it hugged him from the back again.
Jacob didn't say anything. Even the news of your enemy's death would hurt you a little, Maria wasn't Jacob's enemy. He walked outside the room and ran downstairs like a crazy person.
"No...no...no...no! You are lying to me mom and I know it. This is just a scheme to get me and I know it. Where is Maria?
He kept screaming like a crazy person in the middle of the night, it was nice seeing Jacob react this way, more so because it concerned Maria, but too bad Maria wasn't there to see.
Maria! Maria! Where are you, Maria? Jonas! Jonas! He screamed looking around everywhere like he was searching for something. Jonas ran downstairs with others following him behind. Get the car ready. We are going to bring her back home."
