Chapter 1 - Isolated

Silence!

There was total silence in this large hall that could fit in close to a million people.

In this hall, murals that depicted several intricate symbols could be seen. There were countless statues that depicted different people and beasts. However, even if there were countless statues, it was only a few large statues that were under the limelight.

Moreover, the hall had a high roof, a floor that was lit up with countless glowing stones and it's many windows had stained glasses of different colors. There were beautiful chandeliers and even more complicated murals on the ceiling.

In this hall, many people who had different expressions plastered on their faces could be seen. Even though there were many people here, most of them were not opening their mouth to speak and it was only a few among them who broke this protocol, but they only spoke in hushed tones.

Here, Hero Leander could be seen seated among these many people and he didn't dare to speak to anyone even though there was an old woman beside him who was trying to get his attention by screaming in his ears silently.

It could be seen that Hero was isolated from the others. He was seated at the back corner of the hall and there was an aisle around his group that separated them from the rest of the people. No one wanted to be associated with him. It was as if Hero was cursed and the rest of the people didn't want to be close to him, let alone to touch him in fear that they would be cursed too.

However, it was not just Hero who was isolated. In addition, there were other two individuals who were isolated and one of them had chose to ally herself with Hero while the last one had chose to isolated himself from everyone.

The person that allied herself with Hero was an old woman who was pale, emaciated, frail and unattractive. Her skin had wrinkles and the most hated part of her was her mouth that couldn't stop to say something, even in this hall where everyone was silent, the old woman was still moving her mouth while trying to speak in a hushed tone to Hero.

Anyway, when one looked closely at all the people who were seated in this hall, one would find out that all of them were in groups. There was a group that had over a thousand members while there were also small groups like that of Hero which had only three to two members. Only a single unknown individual chose not to ally with anyone.

All in all, all these people had something in common and that was that they had the same pattern of sigil etched on their backs.

All of them didn't have a shirt or a blouse to cover their torso, they were all shirtless which showed the intricate symbols which were etched on their backs to be a part of them.

The sigil that all of the people in this hall had almost resembled a spider and it was red in colour.

Just like everyone else, Hero was wearing red trousers and he carried a weapon with him, even though he didn't have the skills to use the weapon. He was carrying a glaive that was two metres tall just like himself. He was tall, gold haired, white skinned and chubby. It was actually his chubbiness that made the people in the hall to isolate him, thinking that he would only become a burden than a helper.

Winona McCoy was the old woman who was bothering Hero and she chose a sword as her weapon but it seemed like she was more interested with speaking than the weapon that she had put aside.

"Just say it son. We are already dead, right? Everyone in this hall has already attested that. In the months that have passed, I have tried to persuade them to take me in but no one accepted and instead, they retaliated with anger. It really pains my heart. Just look at that guy over there, he looked at us with a frown, what is he thinking?" Winona who was leaning onto Hero's shoulder murmured into his ear while staring at the people in front of them. One of her hand was wrapped around Hero's left arm while her other hand was pointing at the people in front of them.

"However, I think we have a better chance of survival as compared to the other guy." After realizing that Hero didn't budge, Winona added with a frustrated voice. She turned her head and stared at the solo man and their eyes met, she quickly averted her gaze in shame.

Nonetheless, even if Winona continued to converse a gibberish talk, Hero remained silent. He didn't open his mouth the entire time he had been in this hall. He had sat his chubby body on the bench while his torso was leaning forward to hide his potbelly. His head was hanging low, he was looking down and his arms rested on his thighs. He had tied the sheath of his glaive on his back but because he was seated, it had forced the glaive in its sheath to stand in an awkward position which made the people who looked at Hero and Winona to shake their heads.

Clearly, Hero's group didn't look like it was made of fighters but they looked like amateurs or rather, they look like people who were forced to carry their weapons around, unlike the other people who treated their weapons as a part of them.

"Attention everyone! The guardian and saint Nigel will be arriving in two minutes." A man who was cladded in a white cloak said in a loud voice before exiting from the sanctuary.

With the exit of the man, all the people in the hall had their hearts in their throats. Their chests were moving up and down rapidly with a sense of apprehension.

Winona's mouth hung open and she was shaking like mad while Hero was still silent and crouched. What Hero was thinking, no one knew.
