No right? What did he mean, 'no right'? She summoned the courage to ask, ''Why not? Is there someone else who wouldn't think you had a right to kiss me?''Â

He shrugged helplessly. ''You looked so lovely in the pool. You look so lovely now ,and I let myself get carried away , that's all.''
''That's all?'' She lowered her eyes so he wouldn't see the hurt in them.
He did not look at her.
''You're trying to scare me away again ,''she said softly.
''And my next line is , as I recall , 'You don't scare easily.''
He was trying hard to resist her, either out of respect for her , or for some other reason he had no intention of divulging. Who was he trying to protect---himself or her? And from what?Â
