I remember five years ago very well. I had just turned twenty-three, and I wasn't really into partying and that kind of stuff. But there was this girl at university that I kind of liked—her name was Sara. It wasn't just me, though; Sara had plenty of admirers. With her fit body and fashionable clothes, it wasn't surprising. But I never had the courage to go up to her and confess.
However, I'll never forget what happened on October 14th.
It was a cold, rainy day. My class had just ended, and I was heading back to my dorm when I heard shouting and arguing in the campus courtyard. I didn't want to be nosy, but curiosity got the better of me. I peeked from behind a hallway wall that led to the courtyard.
Sara was arguing with a man—Mike. He was one of the seniors, popular among the girls because of his athletic build and good looks. I had heard he was dating Sara, but I had never seen them together before.
"Enough of this nonsense! You single-handedly ruined my life!" Sara yelled, her voice filled with anger.
"I'm not the one playing games. If you had just listened to me like a good girl, things wouldn't have turned out like this! So don't go blaming everything on me!" Mike snapped back with frustration.
"I never…" Sara's voice wavered."I never liked you! So why won't you leave me alone? Why are you so obsessed with ruining my life? Because of you, no one even dares to come near me!" She sounded heartbroken.
I had no idea what to make of this conversation.
I told myself that eavesdropping wasn't a good idea, so I turned to leave… but then—
-Crunch-
"Damn it," I cursed under my breath. I had stepped on a trash bag that the mechanical engineering students had left lying around.
"Who's there?" Mike asked suspiciously."I don't know," Sara replied.
Mike immediately started walking toward my hiding spot, with Sara following behind, looking confused.
Panicking, I tried to slip away quietly, but I forgot about the trash on the ground. My foot got caught, and I tripped, falling flat on my face.
Perfect. Just perfect.
Mike stared at me in shock.
"So this is the reason you've been ignoring me, huh?" His voice was laced with anger as he turned to Sara.
Sara looked at me, surprised, then hesitated for a second before suddenly grabbing my hand and saying confidently:
"Yeah! So what? Is there a problem? Cyrus is my boyfriend."
"You… whore!" Mike roared, raising his hand to slap her.
Even though I didn't have an impressive build, I had practiced Kung Fu To'a all my childhood. I was fast when it came to reacting.
Still half on the ground, I locked my legs around Mike's and twisted, sending him crashing down.
"Ahhh!" he groaned as he hit the ground.
I didn't waste a second. I grabbed Sara's hand and shouted, "Run!"
We dashed into an empty classroom, catching our breath.
Suddenly, Sara burst into laughter.
"You never told me you knew how to fight!" she chuckled.
"Well… we never really talked before," I replied awkwardly.
"That's okay. We're going to talk a lot from now on."
"Huh?" I asked, confused.
Sara's smile disappeared in an instant. She turned to me and said—
"Will you go out with me?"
