*Chapter 3: The Family Secret*
My mom's words hung in the air like a challenge. I felt a surge of determination and curiosity. What was this gift? And why was it so important?
"Tell me more," I urged, my eyes locked onto the symbol.
My mom hesitated, as if weighing her words carefully. "Kaitlyn, our family has been keeping a secret for generations. A secret that could change everything."
I leaned forward, my heart racing with anticipation.
"We're descended from the kami," my mom said, her voice barely above a whisper.
I frowned, unsure what she meant. "The kami?"
My mom nodded. "The spirits of Japanese mythology. Our ancestors were chosen to be their vessels, to carry their powers and wisdom."
I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. Spirits? Powers? This was too much to take in.
"But what does this have to do with me?" I asked, trying to process everything.
My mom's eyes locked onto mine. "You, Kaitlyn, are a direct descendant of the great kami, Amaterasu. You carry her power within you."
I stared at her, stunned. Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun? This was too incredible to believe.
But as I looked at the symbol on the page, I felt a strange connection to it. A connection that went beyond mere curiosity.
It was as if I was awakening to a part of myself that I never knew existed. A part that was connected to the very fabric of Japanese mythology.
And with that realization, everything changed.
