Honestly falling down some stairs isn't the best way to start your morning. And I should know, because on that particular day, that's exactly how my morning began.
My mentor, my teacher, accidentally pushed me down some weird stairs I had never seen before till that day.
Falling like that isn't funny at all. If more, it's painful and I do not recommend you to try it at home. But I mean, if you really want to try it, go ahead. I'm not going to interfere if you truly want to roll down some stairs: your life, your choice. Just don't come haunting me saying that it was my fault that you died.
In any case, it's terrible. I literally rolled a couple of time before reaching the ground.
Groaning in pain, my first instinct was to check if any of my bones were broken. At the time, I was very happy to find out that they weren't, but now that I think about it, I ask myself a question: If my bones had actually been broken, would I still have had to go on the terrible adventure that was awaiting me?
After I checked my bones and groaned another two times, I looked up, only to see my teacher, Bethany, who didn't even try to help me, after accidentally pushing me.
Bethany was a tall woman, that I can say for sure. She couldn't wait for my training to be over, so she could finally have the vacation she so much deserved, just like her two other friends and co-workers: Madison and Elizabeth.
Being chosen to be a librarian was truly an honor, as that would have meant that I could finally have my so desired world domination (evil laughter intensifies). But of course, it wasn't that simple.
The librarians were a group that controlled the universe. I mean they still are, but I have to write this book using the past form of verbs, but you understand anyway.
They use special quills to write people's destinies and lives, thus resulting in them being the supreme leaders of the universe. Sadly, no one knew about them.
I was a librarian-in-training at that time. My mentor, Bethany, had recently discovered my existence and was personally training me in the unknown arts of writing, just like her ex-co-worker, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth was the head librarian, also known as the leader of the group, but every once in a while a new generation of librarians would appear.
I was, obviously, part of this new generation. While Elizabeth had already found her successor a while ago, Bethany found me a little too late and now she was desperately trying to teach me her ways and pass out her legacy onto me, so she could go to Hawaii with her girlfriend.
Right now, Bethany was trying to teach me how to gracefully fall down, without hurting myself (or so I assumed).
She was still staring at me as I tried to get up, but my legs failed me and I fell down.
,,Donnis" she called out my name.
,,Help me!" I told her.
I was desperately trying to get up. I couldn't be stuck in front of some creepy door at the end of some creepy stairs forever!
,,Remember when I told you that you'll have to face a trial in order to get your quill?"
Of course I remembered. She had told me that a million times before. Though she hadn't used the word trial, she used something more like: challenge.
,,Yeah! Now help me! I don't think I can walk!"
She narrowed her eyes. In the past few months I always thought she despised me. This was my confirmation.
,,You can walk just fine" she told me ,,get up Donnis."
I tried getting up and surprisingly, it worked.
,,Now listen carefully. Every librarian needs to complete a challenge in order to get their quill. Your challenge will start the moment you walk through that door."
I turned my head to look at the door. It looked as creepy as the first time I glanced at it.
Before Bethany could continue, Elizabeth's replacement, her protégée, appeared from behind her.
The new head librarian was a girl named Lucy. She was younger than me and had the prettiest blue eyes. What I disliked about her is how much she resembled Bethany.
I once read in a book that the new librarians are supposed to be exactly like the previous one, the one they replace and I was nothing like Bethany. If more, she and Lucy were the same person in a different body. I, on the other hand, didn't resemble any of the previous librarians, which made me feel like I wasn't in fact the one they were looking for.
,,Bethany? Why is Donnis down there?" she asked my teacher. Bethany didn't answer her and instead told me the following:
,,When you open the door you will find yourself in another universe, one similar with this one, but also, completely different."
,,That's not helpful! I don't want to start this challenge!"
,,I don't have anything else to teach you" she shrugged ,,It's time for you to receive your quill."
From behind her, Lucy gave me a thumbs up. She had already faced her challenge a year ago and was now working as the head librarian.
Sometimes I really felt lonely, because, well, there was supposed to be another librarian. But up until then, no one showed up, so I had lost all hope.
,,Well then!" Bethany yelled ,,When you arrive in the parallel universe, you have to find the person that will be conducting your challenge."
,,And how do I know who that is?" I asked her. Bethany shrugged again.
,,When you arrive, you'll meet seven rulers. One of them is the one whom you must meet in order to face your challenge."
,,Which one?!"
,,You gotta find out for yourself" Bethany said and clapped her hands. The door behind me opened and I was sucked inside by a wind current. The last thing I heard was Lucy asking Bethany:
,,Will he be okay?"
