Six years ago
Jane stood on the rooftop, wandering and panicking. What did she just see?
Tonight was supposed to be their anniversary. A night of love, not betrayal. She had stumbled upon divorce papers earlier, but she thought they didn't belong to her. So, she went to look for her husband, to question him. But what she saw instead… scared the hell out of her.
She couldn't breathe. Her chest clenched so tight it felt like a vice, her lungs refusing to open no matter how desperately she gasped. Panic clawed at her throat, and the more she fought for air, the more it slipped away.
She didn't let him see her. Before he could turn, she ran straight to the rooftop. She had nowhere else to go.
Jane didn't want to be noticed by the crowd below, so she picked up her phone and texted Lucy—her adopted sister, the only person she could fully trust.
"Lucy, please, can you come to the rooftop? I'm completely stranded. I don't know what to do right now."
She hit send and waited.
Minutes passed.
Twenty minutes later, Lucy arrived, adjusting her gown, with curiosity written all over her face.
"What's up, Jane? What's the problem? Who's making you feel like this?" she asked, her voice was calm, concerned.
Jane swallowed hard. "I don't know if I'm hallucinating or if what I saw was real… I just—I…"
She couldn't even speak properly.
Lucy's brows knitted together, a hint of confusion flickering across her face. "Calm down, Jane. What's the problem? What did you see? Talk to me."
she swallowed hard before she opened up "I saw my husband, Daniel, with another woman." The words barely made it past Jane's lips. "I couldn't see her face—I tried, but she was turned away… She was on top of him, riding him."
A lump formed in her throat as she forced the words out. Her heart pounded so hard she thought it would burst. That was the only thing she could say to her, she was so embarrassed to mention about the divorce papers she saw earlier..
Lucy's expression didn't change immediately, but there was a flicker in her eyes—shock, or maybe surprise? It didn't mean anything to Jane at that moment.
"So, what did you do when you saw them? Please don't tell me you just ran away without slapping your husband?" Lucy asked, sounding annoyed.
Hearing that made Jane feel a little better—at least someone was on her side, someone supported her .
"I couldn't do anything," she admitted, her voice small. "I just ran like a fool. I didn't say a word. Because the way he… the way he fucked her… It was different. It wasn't just sex, it was passion. Desire. Obsession. And I—" She stopped, shaking her head. She didn't even know what else to say.
Lucy let out a small sigh before handing Jane a glass. "Here, I can't imagine how you must have felt," she said, her voice softer now. "take this It's lemonade. Drink up—it'll help you relax, I know it's hard."
"Oh, I love you so much. How did you know I needed this?" Jane murmured, taking the drink from her. Her hands trembled as she brought it to her lips and took a small sip.
Lucy sat beside her. She reminded Jane of her debts—how her family's debts still weren't fully paid. How she needed two more years to clear them. How she should consider forgiving Daniel.
Maybe she was right.
But no matter how hard she tried, Jane couldn't erase that image from her mind. She couldn't pretend she didn't see it.
Then, suddenly—something felt off.
Her vision wavered, the edges blurring like a fog creeping in. Her hands felt weightless, almost disconnected from her.
"Lucy… I… I think I need to sit down…" Jane's voice barely came out. struggling to find a place to sit
Lucy's brows furrowed. "What's wrong with you?"
"I—, I don't know what's wrong with me, I can't see properly, my body is..." Jane's head spun, a dizzy wave crashing over her. She reached out, her fingers curling around the cold iron railing of the rooftop, trying to steady herself. But something was wrong.
And then she felt A shove.
A force so strong it sent her lurching forward. Her breath caught in her throat as her body pitched over the edge. For a split second, she thought she had tripped. But no—this wasn't her. This wasn't an accident. she was just here a minute ago but now
She was falling.
Her fingers grasped at nothing before catching the railing at the last moment. Her body dangled in the air, the city lights blurring beneath her.
"Lucy!" she screamed, with panic over her voice. "Please—do something! Call 911!, please help me or do something"
But Lucy wasn't there.
Jane darted her eyes around, searching. Lucy had been here just a second ago. She had seen her. Maybe she ran to get help?
Her arms trembled, her grip weakening. The metal dug into her palms, slick with sweat. Her heart pounded in her ears.
Then she felt pain.
A sharp, searing sting shot through her hand " ouc.." she screamed, Her fingers slipped. Someone had just struck her. With glass.
Her grip loosened because of the burning sensation she was already feeling" I can't hold on any longer, Lucy where are you" she screamed while looking below her.
She tried to hold on with her left hand, but she couldn't.
She fell.
Gravity yanked her down. Her fingers scraped against the iron railing, skin peeling, nails breaking. The wind howled in her ears as she plummeted, her screams swallowed by the night.
As she plummeted, memories flooded her mind—her parents, their voices, their dreams for her.
"Mom… Dad… I'm sorry I couldn't fulfill your dying wishes… I'm sorry I couldn't clear your name… I'm sorry I couldn't complete law school and fight for you… I'm sorry I couldn't get back our company… Please forgive me…"
Tears rolled down her face.
If only—if only she had known.
If she had known this was how she would die, she would have looked for him.
Just one more chance.
Please, just one more chance to live.
But it was too late.
Her ill-fated relationship with Life had come to an end.
So, this is how she died. Betrayal killed me before the fall did.
She crashed onto a hard surface. Pain exploded in her body. Her vision darkened.
The last thing she saw was someone staring at the rooftop, an old man standing above her.
A thought went through her head.
Who pushed me? Someone pushed me, or did I trip…
She tried to scream, but only four words escaped her lips before everything faded to black.
"I want to live…"
