I was worried about my move to the small town of Supernaturalville with my Mom. We couldn't afford our last rental house in our previous town. Because Mom was offered a better job opportunity with the local newspaper journalist in Supernaturalville.
I don't know much about my Dad. My Mom got divorced three years ago. When Mom was struggling to keep their relationship from getting worse. Dad lost his job at the history museum a couple years back. That's why Mom couldn't afford to pay all the bills and grocery money on what happened to make Dad leave his job because of his health and was losing his battle. He couldn't stay strong and healthy.
Dad kept coming home from work early at the end and near the middle of shift. Because he wasn't feeling his best to keep the history museum under his protection. So, Mom and I packed our bags and left Dad alone by himself to get himself better on his own.
Mom said Supernaturalville is the friendliest community in an unusual town. With secrets to make you interested in what kind of people like to stay around in Supernaturalville. Because it's attracted to a ghostly haunted cemetery next to the village. Where a couple of kids got ambushed by some ghostly dead kids trapped in a girl's bathroom mirror. Who wanted to make the little girl hate what she sees in her bathroom mirror.
Mom wasn't going to let anything weird happen to us. She was going to investigate a new journal report on a case that just happened in Supernaturalville. A couple of teenagers had snuck into the video arcade in their local shopping mall late at night. And they turned off their new security system. Then, they stole their latest arcade game console. Because if you played it long enough, you would get a high score to win you a cash prize offer.
Because Mom was furious when she heard about it, she was going to my school at Supernaturalville High to investigate some kids there. Mom promised me she wouldn't make fun of me with the other kids at school. Just to do her job. And make the teenage kids pay for what crime they have committed.
Mom wasn't in a good mood last night. When we came home from the local restaurant enjoying a late supper after Mom got off work. Because she kept getting phone calls from complaints from the video arcade manager about the breaking and entering of his store. There they came back again after closing. And stole another high-tech video game console.
"Why is this happening to us, Mom?" I asked my Mother. Who was pulling out white sports car vehicle into our driveway later in the night. After our unusual car pulled into our driveway at our new place in Supernaturalville.
"Try not to worry about anything, my good son," Mom said. Turning off the ignition in her car, Mom unlocked the car doors. And we got out of the car, slowly. Suddenly, our porch light automatically turned on as we stepped onto our front porch.
We stopped when we heard our next door neighbor's dog barking at something. Our neighbor's next door light turned on as we watched our friendly neighbor from next door open her screen door to let out her two black cats she had in her house. And put out a blue dish of cold milk for them by the front door of her house.
"Sorry if my babies startled you, Mrs. Singalong and Mr. Singalong," the kindly friendly neighbor apologized. "Is there anything I can do for your stay here in Supernaturalville, more welcome?" Ms. Wormhole asked, politely. "I baked a cherry pie fresh from scratch this afternoon. Would you care for a slice of homemade cherry cobbler and ice cream?" Ms. Wormhole asked, smiling thoughtfully.
Mom grabbed hold of stomach as it rumbled with nervousness. "Thanks. But my son and I just ate a late supper. We'll come by some other time and accept your offer, Ms. Wormhole. But thank you again," Mrs. Singalong said honestly.
Grabbing the key out of her pink little purse around her shoulder she carried, Mom got out her spare house key. She quickly unlocked the front door. And went inside the house and watched our neighbor stare at us with her stink eye. Through her glass screen door next to us.
Mom quickly sighed heavily and locked our front door. She placed her back against the front door and rested her head against the back of the door. "What am I going to do about us, kid?" Mom asked, keeping her head buried under her arms.
I took a seat next to Mom in our dimly lit entrance to our living room. "It's going to get better, okay Mom? Do you believe me?" I asked, patiently. It started to lightning outside, making the dark shadows in our house brighten up the living room and kitchen.
Mom lifted her head and stared directly into my eyes. "Yes, of course I believe you, baby," Mom said. "But what am I going to do with these kids in this town who keep doing deals with the devil? If I can't catch them in the act, I don't think I can keep this new job. I don't like dealing with kids who break the law and get away with murder. And end up spending time in juvenile hall to be taught a valuable lesson. Please don't give up on me, okay, kid?" Mom said, truthfully into my eyes.
I gave Mom a hug. "I believe in you Mom! You can do anything!" I said, encouraging my Mom. She nodded and whipped away some watery tears streaming her face. "I don't want anything to get too stressed out. I only want you to be happy and comfortable. You can do your new job position, successfully, okay Mom?" I said.
"Okay, you're right!" Mom said, rising to her feet. And helping me up to my own feet, too. "Want a grilled cheese sandwich, before bedtime, kid?" Mom asked. "I know we just ate from the restaurant this evening. But I could have another snack," Mom said.
"No, I'll just get a soda pop from the refrigerator," I explained. "I have to prepare for a spelling test in English class tomorrow. So I better study before I go to sleep tonight," I said. Mom nodded and agreed.
Walking into the kitchen, Mom turned on the lightswitch. Suddenly, the electricity flickered and then went out on us again. The thunderstorm outside the house caused a power shortage. "No!" Great!" Mom and I screamed at the same time.
"Why does the weather here always have to make housing weak?" Mom complained and groaned out loud. Walking to the pantry, Mom opened it. She grabbed a yellow flashlight out of the bottom drawer. Then, she turned on the flashlight. The light flickered and blacked out a couple times. Tapping against the side of the flashlight, the light blinked. And turned on in Mom's face.
Almost blinding Mom, she looked away from the flashlight. "Okay, help me find the circuit breaker in our basement downstairs, kid," Mom instructed me. Lightning flashed outside the windows and made another boom of thunder rattle the walls outside our little house.
I nodded and followed Mom behind the basement door next to the pantry in our kitchen. She led me the way down the dark, moldy, smelly basement. The steps in the wood creaked and made squeaky noises. Making our way down the basement, Mom suddenly slipped on the last couple of steps. She dropped the flashlight and let it fall to the ground and disappeared under the basement steps.
Before I knew it, I too, found myself falling down the steps. I landed on my Mom in the dark basement. Thankfully, the flashlight landed under the last steps. It showed a path of light in the center of the basement.
Slowly getting to our feet, I helped Mom get the flashlight under the basement steps. At first, when I grabbed hold of the flashlight. I thought I saw a mysterious shadowy figure appear by the furnace next to our circuit breaker. Where we were trying to get to.
I looked away from the furnace. When we both jumped! Something fell down from our laundry chute and landed in our laundry basket. Walking slowly toward it, we heard something make a high-pitched whistle and stir in the laundry basket. Where it was trying to get unburied in our dirty clothes.
As we crept closer, I noticed the shadowy cloaked figure appear in the direction of our circuit breaker. His arms were outstretched and walking toward us. I accidentally dropped the flashlight…
The light went out! Plunging us into total darkness. While the mysterious phantom in our basement began to glow and float toward us. We screamed and backed up against our laundry chute.
