Chapter 5 - For Once, Its a Simple Day

The whole evening went by seamlessly after that, Not. Her reaction was full of screaming, it was drama at its finest but by the strangeness of what had just transpired, it was not a reaction enough. The loud scream woke the maid up first who immediately checked her for fever. She actually had a fever to begin with and with how sweaty she was due to anxiety Nona's fever had dropped significantly. She just started pointing towards Mattress and shouting why was it there? Of course no one saw anything, even Eliana rushed to check in and thought that her little sunshine had a nightmare due to having a fever. Next couple of days went by again not going to school all the while Tress, the name he acquired after ringing her ears all day for a second name just like hers, just roamed around since nobody could see him. Turns out coming out of emptiness still means you are empty until you consume something which then causes some visible changes until its completely lost in emptiness. Even I am unclear of the rules here. Upon getting questioned is to why he was here, he said that the idea of life as Nona was imagining in her head really just made him dream of something larger than life, or the end he was nearing to thus he snuck under her palm and traveled with her. He feigns ignorance over knowing how Nona travels between these spaces stating he too passed out due to exhaustion of the journey.

Finally after all the drama it was time to go to school and yet she was more anxious than ever, partly because of how far she has been both mentally and physically from her friends over past few weeks, now that she does not really need their company at home and it is not easy to enter the Estate as more and more land gets cleared for front porch. The second was, she was the daughter of owner of the school which came with its perks yes but more so than anything came with lots and lots of unwanted attention. Boy do I have a news for her that so far kids do not know what happened at her birthday party that night since elders kept their gossipy mouth shut. She would not have been able to handle that. It also did not help the situation that now Tress could go anywhere and make a ruckus but only for her since they seem to have bonded on a separate plane of reality which came with certain perks of being inside her head every time. Right now as he sensed her anxiety, all he did was trying to cheer her up saying its how it will always end but you must begin which made Nona less than pleased. But the time was up as Eliana and her maid Olivia walked her to the bus, I swear it will take a cycle any of these days seeing the size increase of that walkway. They finally did make it and it was not long when the bus arrived.

Tress was having a time of his life, between learning all sorts of cool new things and sheer amount of those compared to his home back which was zero, his reactions to pretty much everything really annoyed Noelle. If that was not enough, her friends were behaving a bit differently than how they were just before, earlier everything that was said was met with a smile and everyone would want to listen to her to now when she said hi to them individually, the hellos were sad enough to bring rain on a sunny beach, it was like a cyclone had hit the way here mood was becoming more and more turbulent. After entering the school it was long and distant walk to the class which even started to annoy Tress who went on about the tirade of how one should always respond if they are being talked to, being from the lonely place he was, it grinded his gears. When you become one with someone's thoughts, their sadness might just pinch you and with how much fed up she seemed just walking to class when her friends who had play with her even as far as just a month or so back could switch up and now walk like a separate clique which would then reflect badly on her.

The teachers too were somehow trying to welcoming but there was this tension the gap where Tress found himself stuck trying to make sense of what was happening. The lectures before lunch were just plain boring. He had to learn more than he had ever care all the while listening to the emotions that were bubbling in Nona's heart. How could it have gone so bad in span of just a few days. Was it jealousy? Was it some rumor? Was it because her father owned the school? The fact that her father even opened this school so you would not have to travel an hour to go for higher studies was a deed that would never receive the amount of appreciation it should have got. As lunch rolled in she would have eaten her lunch alone if it were not for Principal Benedict who called her into the office firstly asking her about her health and how she is adjusting since she joined the school a couple days late and that causes issues with making new friends as kids divide themselves pretty early on into the start of the year. For once it did not feel like it came from a place where intentions were unclear, after all principal Benedict has been a beloved of the town for long, was the first Doctorate receiver and had honors in English. A very smart and well dressed man, his years have been kind to him at first glance you can see the chubby cheeks a bit small on the height and well mannered person, it felt like he was the easiest to know and tell, a trait that worked in his favor as a principal. His office reflected the demeanor and calmness that his persona exuded. It had all the books in the world, it seemed as if you had take them out, it would just fall on you, all of them. Yet they were so neatly organized, to the ceiling high it went, no speck of dust through and through. As Noelle went about admiring such a beautiful office , the boss man asked if she was having lunch alone, to which Nona was immediately reminded of the chaos she found herself in with almost no friends to eat food with. Tress tried consoling her saying that she was going to have food with him to which she had a smile on her face as she recounted just yesterday when Tress tried to eat a chili, he had no sensation of it but his color turned into red whether if was because of color of chili or some reaction, he became a red ball which was now visible and everyone asked her about it and she had its a new ball she had bought and Antony and she played catch with him. It was very fun but not for Tress who never felt that much discomfort in his life just drifting.

So Tress was not to be given anything to eat in public. As she smiled standing there principal was so confused but he was happy that in all day she smiled for the first time. He then asked her that there is his son Laurie ( Lawrence) and he has had a hard time making friends in school and he hoped that she could be his lunch partner if that was not too much trouble. She nodded in agreement and went to look for Laurie. Now that her mood felt slightly better than before did she start taking in how big the school was, for classes 6 to 12, it was separated in two wings, one of class 6 to 10 and other of 11 and 12, the two wings had a giant ground at the center and the school had a front building where there was reception and visitor waiting areas. As she just roamed around the three story building from top to bottom, side to side, each floor was given to each class, with class 6 and 7 sharing the common floor making the building three storied. Principal's office was also in the building at the entrance and walk to that building was lovely, filled with all the flowers and stone steps in grass, this garden connected her building to the front and in the back to the building of seniors via ground. No expense was spared in facility, it was that school was not just opened for the town but for near towns, Antony had the vision of wanting it to have a long lasting prestigious impact. The one place where creativity seemingly died down was at naming the place. Lucian High School, was one of the names of all time she thought as she started laughing to herself all the while Tress kept insinuating that she literally named him Mattress and when asked for a good nickname just like her, all he got was Tressa until he stated he is a boy so it became Tress.

As lunch was coming to an end and she could not find him, she had almost given up hope but she visited the ground, to drink water and near the taps she found a boy sitting reading a book, in a very nerd pose with long hair covering his eyes, half sweater even though it was so cold and not paying attention to her. "AHM AHM!!", as she tried to get some attention but to no avail and Tress mimicking her which now sounded like echo inside her head. She sat beside him and called him "Laurie" and he suddenly shot up, stood there, snapping the book shut. " That is not me, My name is Lawrence" , he jabbed back. "Relax Principal already told me, so calm down." He kept staring at her in disbelief that her father told someone about his nickname. Even he has a cooler nickname Tress felt the need to point out, " If you will not take that name, back to being a Mattress you go." , " No its a lovely name". And she zoned out again. "Hello", now he was trying to gain some attention back. "Oh yes! lets have some lunch, here I picked your box from the office.", she smiled and said while her stomach did all the gurgles in the world. "someone's hungry", " no need for your remarks"

"Lunch is almost over, beside I am not hungry, and you will be late for class." he said in his calm and concerned voice. " Not if I inhale it in next couple of minutes", her mouth was watering. "well you always.....","Not a single other word", she shut him down even before speaking, "Thinking". Wait who said that?( uhmm, back to the scene). "No! I do not want to eat", he tensed up, as Noelle persisted, he pushed her away which made her lunchbox fall.

"Can you not all just leave me alone, I know I am not his real son, stop pestering me about it, making fun of me or reminding me that he loves me like his own child" as tears rolled down his eyes, dumbfounded Nona stood there thinking "wait you are not his real child?" "Think about it, At his age would he have a 11 year old son, he is not eve married." as Laurie winded down and saw the fallen lunchbox, he started to cry. Tress sensing the pain as Nona was thinking about life with no parents or being teased for being adopted, it made her cry, which in turn made Tress wanna cry but "wait I do not have tears." he was more bummed about that.

Laurie picked her up and offered his lunchbox to her which she only accepted if he had share with her and he agreed. They ate the lunch with whistling noise come from both their noses as they stopped crying. The warmth Tress felt in that moment somehow filled him up as well. She was indeed late for class and had to stand out for five minutes more while others laughed at her and Tress made jokes on them. Looks like she calmed down a bit, it would be a normal day after all.
