Chapter 6 - A Growing Suspicion

The days that followed were a flurry of research and unsettling stillness. Liam, true to his nature, dug into the specifics. He pored over Elara's father's writings, cross-referencing cryptic notes with local legend and whatever shreds of material he could uncover about the elusive Silent Path. He questioned the few villagers who were ready to speak, their tales a combination of superstition, whispered rumors, and actual terror.

He heard that the Silent Path had been a part of the mountain's legend for millennia, a secretive society supposed to reside in the darkest depths of the Azure Peaks, eschewing contact with the outside world. Some rejected them as mere myths, while others told of weird sightings, inexplicable disappearances, and a deep-rooted terror of the mountains' dark nooks.

But tangible proof was limited. The emblem, the pendant he now carried tucked in his pocket, was the sole concrete connection. He'd sent it to the city for study, hoping for fingerprints, DNA, anything that may lead him to the culprits behind the orchid's theft and, potentially, Anya's abduction.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere at Haven's Peak was shifting. The theft of the Ghost Orchid, a local legend in its own right, had upset the town's typical quiet. Whispers trailed Liam and Elara, interested eyes watching their every step. Some regarded Elara as a victim, others as a troublemaker, bringing up old concerns.

Liam, with his city-honed reflexes, sensed the change. There was something under the surface, a river of disquiet that went deeper than the missing flower. He observed the way others averted his sight, the timid pauses in their discussions, the doors that closed a bit too hastily when he approached.

He began to think that someone at Haven's Peak knew more than they were letting on. Someone was concealing something, guarding secrets that went beyond local superstition.

One evening, as the fog crept in, spreading deep shadows over the village, Liam found himself lured to the local bar, a darkly lit place named "The Crooked Crow." He wanted a vacation from the musty walls of his hut and the endless pages of her father's notebooks. Maybe, just maybe, he could loosen a few tongues over a pint of ale.

The restaurant was scarcely packed, a few residents hunched around tables, their talks muffled. Liam took a seat at the bar and ordered a drink from the gruff bartender. As he drank his drink, his eyes searched the room, taking in the faces, the body language, the subtle hints that said volumes.

He observed a gathering of guys in the corner, their looks worn and harsh, their eyes hard. They were observing him, their gazes lingering a bit too long. He recognized one of them, a guy called Jebediah, a local farmer he'd met earlier that day. Jebediah had been evasive, his replies brief and clipped, his gaze shifty.

Liam finished his drink, his thoughts working. He needed to go closer to those guys, to hear their talks, to see if they knew anything. He stood up and calmly walked towards the dartboard at the rear of the room. As he tossed a few darts, his ears strained to pick up any bits of talk from the corner table.

"...heard the outsider's been asking questions," one of the guys replied, his voice low.

 "About the girl," another said.

"And the orchid," a third said.

Liam's grip tightened on the dart. He flung it, the dart striking the target with a gratifying thump. He looked at the males, their gazes catching his. He retained their look, a wordless challenge.

The guys glanced aside, their talk beginning in quiet tones. Liam continued to toss darts, his thoughts racing. He needed to come closer, to hear more.

He strolled towards the jukebox, picking a few songs, the music filling the bar, covering the men's talk. He leaned against the jukebox, his eyes on the males, waiting for an opening.

One of the guys, Jebediah, stood up, walking towards the bar. Liam spotted his opportunity. He followed, taking the seat next to Jebediah.

"Evening," Liam remarked, pointing towards the guy.

Jebediah grumbled in answer, his eyes locked on his drink.

"Quiet night," Liam replied, attempting to make conversation.

"Always is," Jebediah remarked, taking a big swallow of his drink.

"Except for the orchid theft," Liam replied, studying the man's response.

Jebediah's eyes flashed, his grasp tightening on the glass. "Just a plant," he murmured.

"A valuable plant," Liam added. "And a rare one. Someone must know something."

Jebediah remained mute, his eyes concentrated on his drink.

"Like maybe someone who knows these mountains," Liam said, his voice quiet. "Someone who knows the secrets."

Jebediah's eyes caught his, a flash of apprehension in their depths. He opened his mouth to speak, but then closed it again, his eyes darting towards the guys in the corner.

Liam knew he was onto something. Jebediah knew something, but he was frightened to speak. Terrified of the guys in the corner, terrified of the Silent Path.

He finished his drink, his thoughts working. He needed to get Jebediah alone, to get him to speak. He needed to find out what he knew, what secrets he was keeping.

He stood up, gesturing towards Jebediah. "Thanks for the company," he said.

Jebediah growled again, his gaze following Liam as he exited the bar. Liam went back to his cabin, the fog whirling about him, the quiet broken only by the sound of his footsteps. He had a strong hunch that the theft of the Ghost Orchid was simply the tip of the iceberg.
