Chapter 71 - Chapter 70 - The First Trial

They had traveled for hours, following the winding trail that cut through dense forests and barren fields. The further they moved away from the ruins, the more the landscape seemed to change. The trees grew taller, their branches twisting into bizarre shapes, while the air grew colder, as though something was watching them from just out of sight.

Luc and Élodie had barely spoken since leaving the ruins, each lost in their own thoughts. They were both aware of the weight of their mission, the knowledge that the fate of not just their world but others rested on their shoulders.

Eventually, the trees parted, and they emerged into a clearing. In the center stood a towering structure, ancient and twisted, resembling a gateway. The entrance was flanked by two large stone pillars, each carved with the same strange symbols they had seen earlier in the ruins.

"This... this is it," Élodie whispered, her voice filled with awe. "This must be one of the trials."

Luc nodded, his gaze fixed on the gateway. He could feel the energy pulsing from it, as though it were alive. There was something beyond that gate—something that would either help them or hinder them in their quest.

They approached cautiously, the ground beneath their feet trembling ever so slightly. The air around the gateway seemed to hum with an ancient power, and as they drew closer, Luc's hand instinctively reached for the hilt of his sword.

"Do you think we're ready for this?" Élodie asked, her voice barely audible.

Luc hesitated, glancing at her. "We have no choice."

With a deep breath, he stepped forward, and as he crossed the threshold of the gateway, the ground beneath him shifted, and the world around them seemed to blur. The air thickened, the sky darkened, and for a moment, everything was still.

Then, the world seemed to snap back into focus, and they found themselves standing on the edge of a vast chasm. On the other side, a towering figure stood—its features cloaked in shadow, but its presence undeniable.

It spoke, its voice booming across the chasm. "Only those who face their greatest fear may pass."

Luc and Élodie exchanged a glance, understanding that the path ahead would not be simple. They were about to face a trial far more personal than they could have imagined.

And it was a trial that would test everything they thought they knew about themselves.
