Chapter 68 - Chapter 67 - The Enigma Revealed

The figure stood motionless in the dim light, its presence unnerving. Élodie instinctively reached for her dagger, but Luc placed a hand on her arm, signaling her to hold back. He studied the cloaked figure warily, his sword still in hand but lowered slightly in a gesture of uncertainty.

"They are not the ones you should fear," the figure repeated, its voice low and chilling. The words lingered in the air, as if they carried a weight far beyond the moment.

Luc took a cautious step forward, his eyes narrowing. "Who are you? And what do you know about us?"

The figure did not respond immediately. Instead, it took a slow step forward, the air seeming to shimmer around it. Élodie felt a strange pressure building in her chest, as though the very atmosphere was thickening. Her heart raced in her chest, and she could hear the soft, rhythmic sound of her own breath as she waited for the figure to speak.

After a long pause, the figure finally spoke again. "I am neither ally nor enemy. But I hold knowledge you will need if you are to survive what is coming."

Luc's grip on his sword tightened. "What's coming?" His voice was laced with suspicion.

"The world is changing," the figure said, its tone almost mournful. "The barriers between realms are thinning, and something—someone—is pushing for their crossing. You will soon see the truth, but it will be a truth that no one can undo."

Élodie's mind raced, trying to grasp the meaning of the figure's cryptic words. "Who is pushing for this crossing?" she asked, her voice trembling.

The figure's hood shifted slightly, revealing only the faintest glow beneath it. It seemed to consider her question carefully before responding. "A force older than your world. It seeks to breach the veil and claim what lies beyond. And you…" It paused, focusing on Élodie with an intensity that sent a chill down her spine. "You have a role to play."

"What role?" Luc asked sharply, his voice tense. "What do we need to do?"

The figure stepped back into the shadows, its form becoming harder to distinguish in the growing darkness. "The answer lies within the ruins you once knew. You must return to where it all began… but be warned, the journey will not be easy."

With that, the figure dissolved into the shadows, leaving Élodie and Luc standing in stunned silence. The air felt heavy, laden with the weight of its words.

"Return to where it all began?" Élodie echoed, looking at Luc. "What does that even mean?"

Luc, still staring into the darkness, seemed deep in thought. "The ruins… the ancient city we passed through when we first encountered the soldiers. It's the only place I can think of that holds meaning, something to do with the past." He looked back at her, his expression grim. "But I don't know what it means either. We need to find out."

Élodie felt her stomach twist with unease. "The ruins… but what if this is some kind of trap? What if the figure was leading us into danger?"

Luc shook his head, his expression determined. "I don't think so. There's too much we don't understand right now. But I trust that we need to go. Whatever is coming, we need to face it."

With a heavy heart, Élodie nodded. They had no other choice.

The two of them made their way through the cave, carefully picking their way past the glowing stone structure that the figure had warned them about. The oppressive silence of the cavern seemed to follow them, making every footstep feel like a sound too loud to be real.

They climbed their way back up through the jagged rocks, the pain from their fall still fresh in their bodies. The daylight above seemed distant, but soon enough, they emerged from the depths of the cavern, stepping back into the forest.

Élodie took a deep breath of the fresh air, trying to steady her thoughts. "So, we head back to the ruins, then?"

Luc nodded. "Yes. The sooner we get there, the better. I don't know what we'll find, but I have a feeling that whatever we've been running from… it's connected."

They turned toward the east, heading in the direction of the ruins. The weight of the figure's cryptic warning hung over them like a cloud, and Élodie couldn't shake the nagging feeling that they were being drawn into something far bigger than they could understand. Something far more dangerous than they had imagined.

The journey was long and treacherous, but Élodie and Luc pressed on. They avoided the paths they knew were heavily guarded, relying on the dense woods and underbrush to mask their movements. As they neared the ruins, the air around them seemed to shift. A sense of foreboding washed over Élodie.

The ruins loomed in the distance, their broken stone structures standing like silent sentinels. But as they approached, something felt wrong. The air was still, unnaturally still, and the wind no longer carried the usual sounds of the forest. It was as if the entire world had gone quiet, holding its breath.

Luc stopped in his tracks, his eyes scanning the ruins. "We're not alone," he muttered.

Élodie's heart skipped a beat as she strained her senses, but all she could hear was the sound of her own breathing. And then—there it was—a whisper on the wind. Faint, but unmistakable.

"Come… closer…"

The voice echoed, distorted, as if it was coming from all directions at once.

"Luc," Élodie whispered, "do you hear that?"

He nodded, his face pale. "We're not alone."

Something was waiting for them in the ruins. Something that had been lying in wait for a long time.

With a mixture of dread and determination, they continued forward, stepping carefully into the ruins, the crumbling stones underfoot like the bones of a forgotten world. What they would find inside, they could not know, but one thing was certain: they were no longer just running from enemies—they were running toward something far more dangerous.

And the past, with all its secrets, was about to rise again.
