Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 The act of forgetting

Ethan Blackwood crouched on the rooftop, his eyes fixed on the mansion below. The moon cast an eerie glow over the perfectly manicured lawn, making the shadows seem to writhe and twist like living things.

Ethan's gaze narrowed as he studied the security system. State-of-the-art cameras, motion detectors, and guards patrolling the perimeter. It was a formidable setup, but Ethan was no ordinary thief.

He was a memory thief.

Ethan's gift allowed him to steal and manipulate memories. He could slip into a person's mind, extract sensitive information, and even plant false memories to cover his tracks.

It was a useful skillset for a thief, but it came with a price. Ethan's own memories were fragmented and unreliable. He remembered snippets of his childhood, but his past was shrouded in mystery.

Ethan's thoughts drifted back to his sister, Rachel. She had disappeared when he was just a teenager, and he had never seen her again. The police had given up on the case, but Ethan had never stopped searching for her.

He pushed the thoughts aside and focused on the task at hand. His client had hired him to steal a valuable artifact from the mansion's owner, a wealthy collector named Marcus Wellington.

The artifact was a small, ornate box with an intricate lock. Ethan's client had provided him with a cryptic description of the box's contents, but Ethan suspected it was more than just a simple trinket.

As he studied the mansion's layout, Ethan's mind began to wander. He thought about his client, a mysterious figure known only as "The Architect." Ethan had never met The Architect in person, but he had a reputation for being ruthless and cunning.

Ethan's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps on the rooftop. He turned to see a figure emerging from the shadows.

It was a woman, tall and athletic, with piercing green eyes. Ethan recognized her as Maya, a fellow thief and occasional ally.

"What are you doing here, Maya?" Ethan asked, his voice low and cautious.

Maya smiled, her eyes glinting with amusement. "I could ask you the same thing, Ethan. But I think we both know why we're here."

Ethan's eyes narrowed. "You're not here to steal the artifact, are you?"

Maya's smile grew wider. "Oh, no. I'm here to make sure you don't get your hands on it."

Ethan's eyes locked onto Maya's, a spark of tension between them. He knew that Maya was a skilled thief, but he also knew that he couldn't trust her.

As they stood there, the air thick with tension, Ethan realized that this heist was going to be a lot more complicated than he had anticipated.

But he was ready for it. He was a memory thief, after all. And he always got what he wanted.

Ethan's gaze flicked back to the mansion, his mind racing with strategies and contingency plans. He knew that he had to get in and out quickly, before the guards realized what was happening.

He turned back to Maya, a calculated risk forming in his mind. "Want to make a deal, Maya?" he asked, his voice low and smooth.

Maya's eyes narrowed, her expression skeptical. "What kind of deal?" she asked.

Ethan smiled, a plan unfolding in his mind. "Let's work together. We can split the profits, and I'll make sure you get out safely."

Maya's eyes searched Ethan's face, looking for any sign of deception. But Ethan's expression was neutral, his eyes giving away nothing.

Finally, Maya nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "Okay, Ethan. Let's do it."

Ethan's eyes locked onto Maya's, a spark of excitement igniting between them. He knew that this was a risk, but he also knew that it could pay off big time.

Together, they set out to steal the artifact, their movements fluid and synchronized. They were a well-oiled machine, each one anticipating the other's moves.

As they approached the mansion, Ethan's heart began to pound in his chest. He knew that this was it, the moment of truth.

He took a deep breath, his mind focusing on the task at hand. He was a memory thief, and he was about to pull off the heist of a lifetime.

But as they slipped into the mansion, Ethan couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. The air seemed to vibrate with tension, and Ethan's instincts were screaming at him to get out while he still could.

He pushed the thoughts aside and focused on the task at hand. He was a professional, after all. And he always got the job done.

But as they made their way deeper into the mansion,Ethan began to circle around Maya, his eyes locked onto hers. He could see the faintest glimmer of amusement in her eyes, and he knew that she was enjoying this little game of cat and mouse.

"Well, well, well," Ethan said, his voice low and smooth. "Looks like we've got a little competition on our hands."

Maya smiled, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "You could say that," she said. "But I think I've got the upper hand here."

Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Oh? And why's that?"

Maya's smile grew wider. "Because I've got the blueprints to the mansion's security system," she said. "And I know exactly where the artifact is kept."

Ethan's eyes narrowed. He hadn't counted on Maya having that kind of information. But he wasn't one to back down from a challenge.

"Is that so?" Ethan said, his voice dripping with skepticism. "Well, I think I'll just have to take that information from you."

Maya's eyes flashed with excitement. "Oh, I don't think so," she said. "You see, I've taken certain... precautions to ensure that my information stays safe."

Ethan's eyes locked onto Maya's, a spark of tension between them. He knew that he had to get that information from her, no matter what it took.

And so the game began.
