Chapter 7 - 6.The Second Verse of Ash

Ashen Wu took a cautious step into the sealed chamber, his breath echoing in the vast silence. The air was thick with residual heat, but unlike the suffocating fire of ordinary flames, this warmth felt ancient—watchful, as if the ashes themselves were aware of his presence.

At the heart of the chamber, the altar of black stone pulsed faintly with dying embers. Upon it lay an ancient scroll, its edges scorched yet untouched by time. Strange runes of gray fire danced across the parchment, shifting and flickering like living flames.

Ashen approached, his fingers tingling. The moment he reached for the scroll, a whisper brushed against his mind.

"He who walks the path of ashes must first be burned by them."

A sharp pain erupted in his palm the instant he touched the scroll.

Gray fire surged from the parchment, coiling around his arm, sinking into his flesh. His veins ignited, his body screaming in agony as the flames burned into his very bones.

But he did not let go.

His teeth clenched, sweat dripping from his brow, but he endured.

Then, the fire vanished.

The scroll had merged with him.

The Second Verse of the Ashen Codex

A flood of knowledge poured into Ashen's mind. Unlike before—when the Codex had simply awakened his flames—this time, it imparted techniques.

Words formed in his thoughts, ancient and powerful:

"Ember Devourer: Fire feeds fire. Flames that seek to harm you shall instead nourish you."

"Cinder Step: Walk upon the air as an ember on the wind. Burn, and leave nothing behind."

Ashen's breath hitched.

These were no ordinary cultivation techniques. They were forbidden—techniques that violated the very foundation of normal cultivation.

Fire was meant to consume, not to be consumed. Flames were meant to burn, not to be absorbed.

And yet…

Ashen felt it. The gray fire within him no longer simply burned—it hungered. It would no longer just destroy; it would feed on destruction itself.

The Awakening

As he stood there, adjusting to the power within him, something shifted in the chamber. The ruins trembled. The temperature spiked.

And then, a figure stepped forth from the ashes.

At first, it seemed to be a man—tall, robed in charred fabric, his face hidden beneath a hood of scorched silk. But his form wavered, like smoke in the wind.

His eyes burned with gray fire, just like Ashen's.

"You have taken the second verse of the Codex." The figure's voice was distant, ancient. "But the Codex does not grant power without purpose."

Ashen steadied himself. "Who are you?"

The figure exhaled, the very breath carrying embers. "I was once the Ash Lord. Now, I am but a memory, a remnant left behind to guide those who inherit my flames."

The Ash Lord…

Ashen clenched his fists. He had expected to uncover a mere technique, a lost inheritance. But instead, he had awakened the will of the very being who had created the Ashen Codex.

"You walk a cursed path, child," the Ash Lord murmured. "The flames you wield—if they grow beyond your control, they will consume not only your enemies but yourself."

Ashen met the figure's burning gaze. He did not flinch.

"I don't care."

The Ash Lord was silent for a moment before letting out a slow, knowing chuckle.

"Good."

The ruins trembled once more, the embers swirling violently.

"Then let us see if you are worthy of my legacy."

Trial by Fire

Without warning, the Ash Lord raised his hand, and the chamber erupted into a storm of gray fire.

Ashen had no time to think. The flames raged toward him, hotter than anything he had ever felt. But this time, he did not try to resist.

He reached inward, calling upon the newfound knowledge that had merged with his very being.

And then—

The flames bent toward him, not to burn, but to feed him.

For the first time, Ashen did not merely wield fire.

He devoured it.

And as the Ash Lord's laughter echoed through the chamber, Ashen Wu realized something.

This was no longer just about cultivation.

This was a path that had never been walked before.

A path that defied the heavens themselves.

A path of ashes.

And he would walk it to the end.
