Chapter 20 - Chapter 20

The tension in the air was palpable as Lyra stood between Kaelen and Darius, her heart pounding in her chest. The sun was setting over the Midnight Crown fortress, painting the sky in hues of orange and crimson, but the beauty of the scene was lost on her. All she could feel was the weight of the moment—the collision of her past and present in a way she had tried desperately to avoid.

Darius was the first to break the silence, his voice low but steady. "I never thought I'd see you again."

Lyra's lips pressed into a thin line, her wolf stirring uneasily at his presence. "I could say the same."

Kaelen stood a few paces behind her, his silver eyes trained on Darius with a protective intensity that made her heart ache. He had been by her side through so much, never pushing, never demanding, but always there. And now, she felt the bond between them humming faintly, a reassurance and a warning all at once.

"I didn't come here to cause trouble," Darius said, his gaze flicking to Kaelen before returning to Lyra. "I just... I needed to see you. To explain."

Lyra folded her arms across her chest, her voice cold. "Explain what? That you rejected me? That you thought I wasn't good enough for you?"

"I was wrong," Darius admitted, his tone earnest. "I see that now. I didn't understand what we had—what the bond meant. I was selfish, Lyra. I thought I could choose my path, and I didn't realize what I was losing until it was too late."

His words hung in the air, heavy with regret, but Lyra couldn't bring herself to feel sympathy. She had spent years carrying the weight of his rejection, trying to prove to herself that she was worth more than the choices he had made. And now, standing before him, she realized that his apology, though long overdue, wouldn't change anything.

"You didn't just lose me," she said, her voice sharp. "You took away everything I thought I knew about myself. You made me question my worth, my place in the pack. Do you have any idea what that did to me?"

Darius flinched at her words, his jaw tightening. "I know I hurt you," he said softly. "And I'll never forgive myself for that. But I'm here now, Lyra. I want to make things right."

"Make things right?" Kaelen's voice cut through the tension like a blade. He stepped forward, his presence commanding as he positioned himself between Lyra and Darius. "You think you can just show up and erase the damage you've done? It doesn't work that way."

Darius bristled, his wolf rising to the surface as he squared his shoulders. "This doesn't concern you," he said, his tone laced with warning. "Lyra and I—this is between us."

Kaelen's silver eyes blazed, his wolf not far behind. "It concerns me because she's under my protection. And because she deserves better than you."

"Enough!" Lyra's voice rang out, firm and unyielding. Both men turned to her, their tension momentarily diffused by the sheer force of her presence. She stepped between them, her gaze hard as she looked at Darius.

"You don't get to come here and act like you care," she said, her voice trembling with emotion. "You don't get to apologize and expect me to forgive you just because it's convenient for you now. I've moved on, Darius. I've found a place where I'm valued, where I'm respected. And I won't let you take that away from me."

Darius's expression crumbled, his regret etched into every line of his face. "I'm not trying to take anything away," he said quietly. "I just... I needed you to know that I see you now. That I see the woman you've become."

Lyra's throat tightened, her emotions warring within her. Part of her wanted to believe him, to accept his apology and let go of the anger that had festered in her heart for so long. But another part of her—the part that had fought tooth and nail to rebuild herself—refused to give him that power.

"I don't need your validation," she said, her voice steady. "And I don't need your guilt. You made your choice, Darius. Now live with it."

Kaelen placed a hand on her shoulder, a silent show of support that steadied her. His presence was a balm to the raw wounds Darius had reopened, a reminder that she was no longer the broken girl who had been cast aside.

Darius's shoulders sagged, the fight draining out of him as he nodded slowly. "I'm sorry," he said again, his voice barely above a whisper. "For everything."

Lyra didn't respond. She turned and walked away, Kaelen falling into step beside her. The silence between them was heavy, but not uncomfortable. It was a silence of understanding, of shared pain and unspoken promises.

When they reached the edge of the forest, Lyra finally spoke. "Thank you," she said softly, her gaze fixed on the horizon.

Kaelen looked at her, his expression gentle. "For what?"

"For being here," she said. "For standing by me."

Kaelen's lips curved into a faint smile. "You don't have to thank me for that. I'd do it again in a heartbeat."

The bond between them hummed softly, a quiet reassurance that neither of them was alone. And as they walked back to the fortress, Lyra felt a weight lift from her shoulders. She had faced her past and emerged stronger, ready to embrace whatever the future held.
