The birthday party for Henry Holman was in full swing. The host, his girlfriend, and his guests were all in a celebratory mood, apart from a single woman silently watching the gathering in agony.
In her hand, she tightly clutched a set of divorce papers, although she desperately hoped she wouldn't have to use them as she limped toward the host with trepidation.
When she was but a few steps away, the host's gleeful expression suddenly morphed into one of distaste upon catching sight of her.
"Mia, can you stop being so despicable?" He questioned angrily, his hands raising defensively as if to ward off her approach. His eyes then narrowed in annoyance upon spotting the papers in her grasp, assuming it to be their marriage certificate and that once again she was here to insist upon their sham of a marriage.
His patience at this point had worn thin; he just couldn't be bothered. He ignored the grimace of pain upon her face and ignored her twisted foot; he simply couldn't care any less.
"Are you really this shameless?" He snapped, "This marriage that you gained through lying and scheming, do you really want to hold on to it, hold on to me so desperately? However, no matter how hard you try to break up me and Jamie, you will never succeed!"
A gentle voice called out, "Henry," and he turned to see Jamie sidling up beside him, looking to him as if he were her knight in shining armour and she a damsel in distress requiring his defence.
Ignoring the fact that his legal wife, Mia, was still standing right in front of him, he snaked an arm around Jamie's waist and drew her closer. It was only then that he turned to regard Mia once more, who was staring at him with disappointment-laden eyes.
But in his mind, her disappointment had nothing to do with him.
To Mia, however, who had once been passionately loved and protected by Henry Holman, his cruel words and cold indifference were far more painful than her twisted foot and other physical injuries could ever be.
Henry's brows furrowed in disgust, his tone more contemptuous than before as he continued to berate Mia, "You chased her away once by lying to her and sharing fake photos of us being together in bed, but I am telling you now, I will never let you succeed again!"
He then threw the wine in his glass at the woman's face, ignoring how Mia's face was twisted into a painful grimace and her foot was twisted at an odd angle.
The man was annoyed with the fact that she was trying to shove their marriage in his face when he couldn't care less about her.
Mia could not understand how the man who had chased her for years before threatening her with his life and dragging her to marry him had changed so much. He told her that if she didn't marry him, then he would continue to stand in front of her house until she agreed.
Remembering the past, Mia's eyes turned red as tears started to brim within them.
Seeing that Henry was unhappy, one by one his friends who came to join him in the party couldn't help but rebuke Mia.
"Do you really have to go to such lengths, Mia? Today is Henry's birthday; don't you think it was a bit too much for you to come here and cause trouble like this?"
"That's right. You are going too far, Mia. We understand that you cannot accept the changes, but don't you think it's about time for you to stop? Henry doesn't remember you, and even the doctor said that he needs peace. Why are you doing things that agitate him?"
"It must be because she is not willing to let go, and I understand who would willingly let go of the title of Mrs. Holman?"
"Mia, we are not being mean to you," stated another friend of Henry. "But you should really consider divorcing Henry; even the doctors said that his memories might never recover. How long are you going to wait and suffer his insults like this?"
Though his words were harsh, Mia had to admit that compared to other arseholes, this man was truly looking out for her.
She went back to the day when everything went wrong.
Six months ago, when she and Henry were driving to their honeymoon destination, they ended up getting involved in an accident when a truck driving from the wrong side slammed into their car.
Though the two of them were rescued in time, their lives were saved at the cost of their peace. Henry lost all of his memories from the past three years, getting stuck in those days when he was dating Jamie.
And ever since then he had never looked at her with the same adoration and love that he used to have when he was pursuing her.
Mia snapped out of her memories and looked at the man who was staring at her with those golden eyes that once made her heart warm up but now they made her shudder as if a poisonous viper was looking at her.
She staggered to her feet and stood up straight before looking Henry right in the eyes. She ignored the rest of the crowd, who were sneering at her, as Mia knew that these people didn't care about her. They only cared about Henry and the position of Mrs. Holman.
No matter what kind of woman was holding that title, they would support her like blind sheep.
Mia said to him, "Henry, do you think that I held on to this relationship because I care about the position of your wife? No. The reason I held on this long was because I was worried that one day my Henry would come back and blame me for giving up on him so easily."
"For not fighting for him."
"That's the reason I held on."
"But now I am tired." She threw the divorce papers that were doused in wine and hurled them at Henry's face. Her lips curled up in a mocking sneer, and she said to Henry, "Now if your memories come back, then you can only blame yourself, Henry. Because I tried hard to keep holding on—but now I can't hold on. So, let's get a divorce."
