Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 — Reincarnation

Quinn's eyes slowly opened, but he was met with an inky blackness that seemed to swallow everything. He tried to remember how he got there, but his memories were hazy. The last thing he remembered was going to bed in his own room after an argument with his step mom. But how did he get here? It had to be her doing... He gritted his teeth in frustration, hands breaking into firm fists.

As much as he wanted to sit, he couldn't. It was almost as if he couldn't even feel his own limb, forcing him to continue lying. Just then, a faint glow appeared before his eyes. A virtual screen flickered to life, displaying a message in crisp, white letters:

«[ Reincarnation Successful ]»

Quinn's eyes widened. What reincarnation? What game is this? "What the..?"

«[ Choose Your Name ]»

Quinn hesitated for a moment before shrugging. "Uhm... Quinn? Quinn Winter."

«[ Familiars ] [ Choose Your Familiar ]»

A list of options scrolled down the screen:

> Slime

> Cupid

> Chimera

> Serpent

> Kitsune

> Phoenix

His eyes widened as he stared at the list, unable to understand what was going on? What kind of game was this? And why did he have to choose a familiar? He remained silent, unsure of what to do. Just as he was about to ask a question, a warning flashed on the screen in bold, red letters:

«[ Choose Your Familiar. You Have 30 Seconds Or The System Will Choose For You! ]»

His heart skipped a beat. System? He didn't want some unknown system choosing his familiar. He scanned the list again and randomly selected an option:

"Kitsune!"

The screen flickered once more, and the messages disappeared. There was an odd air of silence, and he just stared into the darkness that surrounded him. This had to be a dream. This has to be the worst dream of the year. But if it was, he wanted to wake up. As he laid in the darkness, a new flash appeared before his eyes:

«[ Congratulations! You've successfully chosen the Kitsune as your familiar. ]»

«[ Koitsune Unlocked! ]»

Beneath the message, a description appeared:

«[ Koitsune: A basic, one-tailed fox familiar. Inexperienced and still developing. ]»

His eyes narrowed. This wasn't what he was expecting. An inexperienced and still developing demon fox? Unless. Another flash appeared:

«[ New Spell Unlocked: Foxfire Lv1 ]»

His eyebrows rose. Foxfire, huh? He had never heard of anything like that before. Except, he had read about some of these kitsune possessing a wide array of abilities, but never had he heard about anything called foxfire. If this was a dream, it was a good one. The screen flickered again, displaying a new message:

«[ Spells ]»

His eyes scanned the list beneath:

> Foxfire Lv1

> Demon Lantern Lv1

> Telepathy Lv1

He remained silent, staring at the screen and weighing the different spells. What were these spells for? And how was he supposed to use them? Was he trapped in some sort of game? He wasn't sure, and it was making him feel anxious. As he pondered, a new flash appeared:

«[ Welcome to Pandora! ]»

His eyes widened as a jolt of electricity burned through him. The sensation was sudden and intense, leaving him breathless. Maybe he was finally waking up. But, for some reason whatever he was feeling felt so real, he doubted this had to be a game.

As quickly as it had begun, the sensation stopped. Quinn blinked once, twice, and suddenly found himself in a different environment. A stone lid slid open above him, and he sat upright, realizing he was lying in a stone coffin. 'Am I dead!!!?'

Fear gripped his heart as he stared across the tomb, taking in the dusty pillars and the faint light seeping through the cracks. What was this place?

As he watched, the light grew brighter, illuminating the room. His eyes adjusted, and he saw that he was in some sort of ancient tomb. With a sense of curiosity, he stood up, feeling his insides twist with fear. He took a step forward, and that's when he heard it – a faint yelping sound.

Quinn turned, and his eyes narrowed. That's when he saw it – a small, fluffy fox with piercing eyes, staring up at him.

"And the dream never gets any worse?" Quinn muttered, his eyes fixed on the fox. Its furs were a shade brighter than dark, with accents that faded into a dazzling shade of blue.

The fox was staring at him, its tail twitching. Then, in a movement that caught his attention, it leapt into the air..and instead of falling, it was flying.

It moved as though it was swimming in water, slowly but surely swirling around him in a playful gesture. There was something about its eyes, they were piercing and intimidating as if the fox in front of him was a predator.

«[ Choose A Name For Your Fox ]»

He was silent for a minute, just staring at her fox as it leapt and swirled in the air. Maybe, just maybe. He wasn't sure.

«[ You Have Fifteen Seconds To Decide Or A Name Will Be Randomly Chosen For You! ]»

Wait what!? He gritted his teeth, before he suddenly said, "Jinx! I choose Jinx!"

«[ Familiar: Koitsune ]»

«[ Name: Jinx ]»

«[ Level: One ]»

Quinn just stood there, staring with disbelief. There was something definitely wrong with everything. He couldn't quite understand what was. The last thing he remembered he was going to sleep after his argument with his stepmom, and now he was waking up trapped in this weird weird game of a dream? This wasn't making sense, but maybe if he complied, he'd eventually wake up somehow.

«[ Quest: Exit The Tomb ]»

He shrugged. Okay, exit the tomb. Simple enough.

The tomb was dimly lit. His eyes adjusted slowly, and he saw that the room was filled with gold bricks piled high, like a treasure trove. Skeletons leaned against pillars, their empty eye sockets staring at him. This was creepy....but the gold, it was real and he knew it.

He fought the urge to explore, focusing instead on finding the exit. His feet carried him forward, despite the cold seeping into his bones. Finally, he reached the exit – a massive stone door sealed with strange carvings. His hand reached out, touching the door. He could feel the fox still flying behind him, as if it was playing some sort of game.

In an instant, he felt like water had been poured over him. The sensation was sudden and intense, leaving him breathless. When he opened his eyes, he found himself standing outside the tomb, as if he had teleported. Which was new to him.

«[ Quest Accomplished: +10 XP ]»

The sight took his breath away. A beautiful landscape unfolded before him – rolling hills, towering trees, and a staircase leading down from the tomb. His eyes widened as he took in the view. This was definitely not his world....

As he walked down the stairs, he felt a sense of curiosity over what he would come across.. At the edge of the stairs, he saw a woman standing with her back to him. Her mane of hair cascaded down her shoulders, and a pair of horns protruded from her head, like those of a sheep.

Quinn's eyes narrowed. Who was this?

As he approached, the woman turned. Her eyes met Quinn's, and she gasped, her eyes widening in shock. Her jaw dropped, and she collapsed onto her knees.

"My lord... y-you're awake?" she stuttered, her voice trembling.

Quinn's insides tightened. Finally awake? What did she mean? The woman lifted her eyes, meeting his gaze. Fear and awe mingled in her expression.

"We weren't expecting you to wake up this early... sire," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

'Sire?' Quinn approached her, despite the fear gnawing at his heart. He stared at the woman, taking in her strange yet beautiful features. "I'm sorry, but who are you?" He asked, trying to keep his voice steady.

The woman's eyes sparkled, and a sly grin spread across her face. "Sire... you've forgotten me?" she asked, her voice laced with amusement. "That must have been because you were asleep for quite a long time..." Her eyes half-closed, and she continued, "It is me, sire... your mistress... Morgana."

Quinn's insides twisted, and his mind raced with questions. Mistress? That can't be. He didn't have a mistress, he couldn't even have a girlfriend. This was too much for him. But then, something sparked in his head – memories long buried. But they weren't his. He could feel it. He saw her face, her hands covered in blood, laughing maniacally. Her cheeks were bright red, and her eyes gleamed with a fierce intensity.

Quinn gasped, his eyes widening. "Morgana!"

The woman's grin grew wider. "Yes, sire?

Her cheeks flushed, and he felt his heart racing. What did she mean by mistress? He couldn't have been sleeping around her, could he? And what were these memories that seemed to belong to someone else?

"I'm super confused..." Quinn muttered, trying to process the chaos in his mind.

She rose to her feet, her eyes staring into his. "Save yourself the trouble, my liege. I'll help you understand what's confusing you."

"Please do...." He said.

Her smile grew wider, her eyes staring intently into Quinn's. Her cheeks flushed, and she stumbled backward, as if caught off guard."You, sire....." she exclaimed, her voice trembling. "...are the Demon King!"

Quinn felt like he'd been slapped in the face. His eyes widened, and he took a step back, as if trying to escape this false truth. "Do I look anything like a demon king to you?" Quinn asked.

Morgana's gaze roamed over him, from head to toes. "Well, you've changed a lot since the last time I saw you... but, you still look pretty much the same."

Quinn's eyes narrowed. What did she mean by that?

Just then, a notification flashed in his eyes:

«[ New Title Unlocked: Demon King]»

Quinn's insides caught with surprise. Demon King? What did that even mean? He didn't remember ever being a demon king. He was just a student, a high school student wrestling with puberty. Another pop-up flickered to life:

«[ New Spell Unlocked: Presence Of The Demon King Lv1]»

His mind wrestled. Spells? Titles? What kind of game was this? And then, another pop-up appeared:

«[ Character Profile]»

«[ Name : Quinn Winter]»

«[ Age : 17 ]»

«[ Race : Human ]»

«[ Title : Demon King ]»

«[ Level : 5 ]»

«[ HP : 100]»

«[ Mana : 200]»

«[ XP : 20 ]»

Quinn felt like the world was ending. He stared at Morgana, then at the fox, Jinx, which was still dancing in the air, floating around him. "If this is a dream, I need to wake up," he muttered, feeling overwhelmed.

Her expression turned serious. "I'm afraid this is no dream, sire. You are the Demon King, and you have a responsibility to fulfill."

Quinn's eyes narrowed. Responsibility? What was she talking about now? But before he could ask any questions, she continued, "We need to get you prepared for your coronation ceremony. The people are waiting for their king."
