Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The First Move

The city was alive with the hum of traffic and the chatter of pedestrians as Evelyn and Lucas made their way through the crowded streets. They were dressed in plain clothes, blending in with the crowd as they moved toward their target. Victor had stayed behind at the cabin, his injuries still too fresh for him to join them. But Evelyn knew he was with them in spirit, his determination fueling her own.

The building was a nondescript office building in the heart of the city, its glass facade reflecting the bright sunlight. But Evelyn knew better. This was one of the Kanes' fronts—a shell company used to launder money and hide their operations.

They moved quickly, slipping through the side entrance and into the building. The lobby was empty, the only sound the faint hum of the air conditioning. Evelyn's heart pounded as they made their way to the elevator, her mind racing with the plan.

They reached the top floor, the doors sliding open to reveal a sleek, modern office. The room was empty, the only sound the faint ticking of a clock on the wall. Evelyn moved to the computer, her fingers flying over the keyboard as she hacked into the system.

"We're in," she whispered, her voice low.

Lucas nodded, his sharp green eyes scanning the room. "Get what we need and let's go."

Evelyn's heart raced as she downloaded the files, her mind racing with the implications. This was just the beginning. But it was a start.

As the files transferred, Evelyn's eyes scanned the room, taking in the details. The office was immaculate, with no personal touches to speak of—no photos, no mementos, nothing that hinted at the man behind the power. It was as if the Kanes existed only in the present, untethered from any past or future.

The sound of footsteps echoed outside, and Evelyn's chest tightened. She glanced at Lucas, his sharp green eyes meeting hers. "We need to go," he whispered, his voice urgent.

Evelyn nodded, her fingers flying over the keyboard as she finished the download. She grabbed the flash drive and slipped it into her pocket, her heart pounding as they moved toward the door.

But as they stepped into the hallway, the sound of voices grew louder. Evelyn's chest tightened, and she glanced at Lucas, his expression grim.

"This way," he whispered, pulling her toward the stairwell.

They moved quickly, their footsteps silent on the concrete stairs. The sound of voices followed them, growing louder with each step. Evelyn's heart pounded in her chest, her mind racing with the plan.

They reached the ground floor, the door to the stairwell creaking as they pushed it open. The lobby was still empty, but the sense of danger was palpable. They moved toward the exit, their footsteps quick and deliberate.

But as they stepped outside, the sound of gunfire filled the air.
