Chereads / Soulbound: The Shinigami's Oath / Chapter 4 - A Shinigami’s Resolve

Chapter 4 - A Shinigami’s Resolve

The silence of the warehouse was palpable save for the quietest of gasps and the virtually inaudible vibrations of lingering soul energy vibrating in the air. Those three Shinigami stood in rough formation, gazes glued to Kaito and Emiko, each one wanting what they thought was rightfully theirs. Kaito's hand did not falter in clenching the hilt of his sword and his face was cold and unyielding.

"You've made a mistake, Tatsuo," Kaito said, his tone calm even as tension thickened around them. "You believe this is about power — taking Emiko's life for your own gain — but you're wrong. She's not your prize. She's my responsibility."

Tatsuo's smile contorted wider, then, with a glint of derision in his eyes. "Responsibility? You don't understand, do you, Kaito? It's a new world, and its anarchy that isn't about responsibility. It's about strength. Only the strong survive, and you've shown that you're not strong enough to keep her safe." He looked at Emiko with disdain. "Just a pawn, Kaito. A tool to make you stronger. But you won't realize that until it's too late."

Kaito gripped his sword tighter, and the blade sang with dormant energy. His silver eyes glanced back at Emiko, making sure she was still behind him, safe, for now. He didn't want to draw her into this fight. Not yet. But the way Tatsuo talked, the way he belittled Emiko, it made Kaito's blood burn.

"You've always been a fool, Tatsuo," Kaito said, spitting. "You think I forgot what you are? What you've become? The world is no longer a game. You're not playing by your rules."

Tatsuo narrowed his eyes and his sword caught the dim light. "Then we will see whether your determination is as strong as your words."

Tatsuo leapt forward without warning, his katana slicing through the air with extreme air. Kaito was prepared, his own blade rising as if learnt by rote to intercept Tatsuo's blow. Clang! The sound of swords crashing against each other resounded as the Shinigami fought in the warehouse.

Kaito's movements were quick and smooth, a dance perfected over centuries. Each punch was exacting, each block purposeful. But Tatsuo was no slouch. He was equally talented, equally fierce. The two Shinigami were equal, neither backing down.

Behind Kaito, Emiko's heart raced as she tried to process what was happening. She had seen enough to understand that Kaito was strong — far stronger than she had ever realized. But these other Shinigami… were not like him. But they were ruthless, motivated by their lust for power.

The shiver that she felt when things went black — it wasn't the trembling beauty of it, but more like a chill running down her spine as she learned just how dangerous this world was — how far inside of it she was already trapped.

Tatsuo brought down the blade with brutal force, targeting Kaito's chest. Kaito barely had time to respond, sword raised to deflect the blow just in time. The impact reverberated through his body, but he held steady. His silver eyes blazed with intention, unfaltering.

"You're not taking her from me," Kaito growled, low but full of menace that echoed in the walls. "Not now, not ever."

Tatsuo smirked, his eager expression all twisted up. "You are stronger than I had imagined. But it won't be enough."

As Tatsuo's power flared, the air in the surrounding thickened with spiritual energy. Emiko felt the ground shake beneath their feet; she could sense the change in the air, that this wasn't just another battle.

Kaito's blade shone with increased brightness, the luminosity engulfing him, his power at its climactic. "I won't let you hurt her," he said, and his voice didn't shake, not even as his body did. "I've already lost once. I won't lose again."

Tatsuo's grin faltered for the briefest of moments before he regained his composure, suddenly swinging his blade at Kaito with vicious intensity. "We'll see about that."

Kaito's body reacted in lightning speed, his sword slashing through the air in a deadly arc. The clash of their blades rang again, a hideous sound that echoed in the hall of the warehouse. Kaito countered Tatsuo's might, and their swords clashed as they fought for superiority.

Emiko's heart raced as she scanned the two fighters. She did not know, how long, she could remain cloaked, and in the shadow. Every moment of her life felt like it could be her last, but she couldn't bring herself to go. She couldn't just run. Kaito had defended her when no one else could. Now, she had to trust him.

Then, without warning, the fighting stopped.

A foreign energy permeated the room, a dark and oppressive life force that made Emiko shiver. Tatsuo's eyes went wide with surprise, dropping his grip on his sword for just a second. Kaito put a step behind, suddenly suspicious with narrowed eyes.

Emerging from the warehouse shadows was something else—a figure cloaked in black, its presence more oppressive than anything Kaito had experienced before. It was a tall figure, with a mask covering its face, an aura of enormous power being emitted from him.

"Enough," came a voice from the figure, dark and authoritative.

Tatsuo's gaze played between confusion and fear. "Who—who are you?"

The figure advanced, its eyes scanning the tableau. "I have come here to put an end to this senseless war. You are wasting your time, Tatsuo.'

Kaito's posture was knee jerk protective; his hand hadn't left the hilt of his sword. "Who are you?" he asked, his voice low, but there was an undercurrent of danger in it. "And what do you want?"

The figure turned its head slightly, as though considering Kaito's question. "I am not your enemy, Kaito Ryūzaki," it said in a cold voice. "I've come to make you an offer."

Kaito's eyes lidded and he tightened his hold on his sword. "I'm not interested in what you're offering."

"Then you shall rue it," the figure replied inscrutably, retreating back into the shadows.

The figure's presence in the air felt heavy with meaning, but none in the warehouse could fully grasp it. Tatsuo and the others were look with give up or they may no realize what to do. They hadn't expected this masked figure to be on the field because this masked figure had shifted the dynamics of the battle in ways they hadn't thought were possible.

Kaito stood ready, having no doubt. Whatever this new danger, he was not going to back down. Not now. Not ever.
