Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 – The Ordinary Mask

The sky above Emerald High School was overcast, a dull gray that reflected the life Ochieng had chosen to live—ordinary, unnoticed, and painfully mundane. He walked through the school gates, hands in his pockets, his uniform slightly wrinkled, his expression indifferent.

To everyone around him, he was just another student—one of the many. The quiet one, the one who never stood out, never fought back, never sought attention.

But if only they knew…

If only they knew that beneath the surface, Ochieng was anything but ordinary.

He was the rightful heir to a trillion-dollar empire, a man trained in martial arts by a grandmaster feared across continents, a figure whispered about in the darkest corners of the underworld. But here, in this school, he was just Ochieng, the nobody.

And that was exactly how he wanted it.

At least, for now.

The hallway was buzzing with life as students gossiped, laughed, and moved to their morning classes. Ochieng walked past a group of girls who barely spared him a glance, their attention fixated on someone else—

Brian Makori.

The school's golden boy. Handsome, rich, and cruel in ways that made others admire rather than fear him. His eyes landed on Ochieng, and a smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.

Here we go again.

"Ochieng!" Brian called out mockingly, his voice loud enough for everyone to hear. The hallway grew silent as students turned to watch.

Ochieng stopped, but he didn't react. He never did.

Brian sauntered up to him, flanked by his usual group of admirers. "You're always so quiet, huh? Makes me wonder if you even have a tongue."

Laughter erupted from the crowd.

Ochieng's gaze remained unreadable. He had dealt with worse—far worse. If only they knew how insignificant this was compared to the real battles he had faced.

Brian stepped closer, lowering his voice so only Ochieng could hear. "Stay in your place, loser."

Ochieng's fingers twitched.

He had made a promise to himself—never reveal his true nature unless absolutely necessary.

So, he exhaled slowly, suppressing the instinct to crush the arrogance out of Brian with a single move.

Instead, he gave a lazy shrug. "Sure."

Brian frowned, sensing something odd in Ochieng's indifference. But before he could push further, a voice interrupted.

"Leave him alone, Brian."

A girl stepped forward.

Akinyi.

The school's campus belle. Beautiful, smart, and—to Ochieng's mild surprise—one of the few who didn't treat him like a ghost.

Brian chuckled, raising his hands in mock surrender. "Relax, babe. I was just having fun."

Akinyi didn't look convinced, but before she could argue further, the bell rang.

Ochieng turned away, heading toward his classroom.

He had no interest in being a hero. No interest in proving anything to these people.

He was just here to pass time.

But what he didn't know was that fate had already started moving.

And soon, the world would no longer be able to ignore him

The sky above Emerald High School was overcast, a dull gray that mirrored the monotony of Ochieng's daily life. With hands tucked into his pockets and his expression unreadable, he walked through the school gates like a ghost among the living.

Nobody paid him any attention.

To them, he was just Ochieng, the nobody.

But if they only knew the truth...

If they knew that the quiet student they mocked and ignored was the sole heir to an empire so vast that the world's wealthiest bowed before it. If they knew that, in the shadows, he had been trained by a legendary grandmaster whose name alone sent chills down the spines of warriors.

If they knew... would they still dare to look down on him?

Ochieng smirked faintly to himself. It didn't matter.

Right now, he was just another student at Emerald High. A nobody. And he preferred it that way—for now.

---

The school buzzed with its usual energy. Students chattered in groups, some gossiping about the latest trends, others swooning over the wealthiest boys on campus.

Ochieng walked past a group of girls.

"Brian is so cool! Did you see his new car?"

"Ugh, I wish he'd notice me. A guy like that is a dream."

Ochieng barely spared them a glance. He had long since stopped expecting fairness in life. Wealth determined respect here. Backgrounds mattered more than character.

And he, by choice, was invisible.

That was until a voice rang out behind him—one he had grown all too familiar with.

"Ochieng!"

The hallway grew quiet. A few students turned, already grinning in anticipation.

Ochieng stopped but didn't react.

From behind, Brian Makori approached, his designer shoes clicking against the tiled floor. Tall, broad-shouldered, with slicked-back hair and a smirk that never seemed to fade, Brian was the school's golden boy. The heir to a successful conglomerate, admired and feared in equal measure.

And he had a habit of targeting Ochieng.

Brian slung an arm around Ochieng's shoulder, forcing a laugh. "Man, I keep forgetting you exist. Do you ever speak?"

Snickers rippled through the crowd.

Ochieng remained silent, his face unreadable.

Brian's grip on his shoulder tightened slightly, his voice lowering so only Ochieng could hear. "Stay in your place, loser."

Ochieng's fingers twitched.

If this had been anywhere else—if he were not committed to living a quiet life—Brian wouldn't have even had the chance to breathe those words.

But Ochieng had learned restraint. He had made a promise to himself.

Never reveal your true nature unless absolutely necessary.

He let out a slow breath, suppressing the instinct to break every bone in Brian's hand with a single twist.

Instead, he simply shrugged. "Sure."

Brian frowned. He had expected fear, maybe humiliation. But not this—this calm indifference.

Before he could say anything else, another voice cut through the air.

"Leave him alone, Brian."

A girl stepped forward.

Akinyi.

The school's undisputed belle. Long dark hair, bright intelligent eyes, and a confidence that made her stand out even among the elites.

She wasn't just beautiful—she was powerful in her own way. She was one of the only students who never looked down on Ochieng.

Brian chuckled, raising his hands in mock surrender. "Relax, babe. I was just having fun."

Akinyi didn't look convinced, but the bell rang before she could argue further.

Brian leaned in toward Ochieng, his smirk returning. "Remember, people like you don't belong in our world."

With that, he turned and walked off, his admirers following.

Ochieng remained still for a moment.

He wasn't angry.

He wasn't hurt.

He was just... waiting.

One day, all of this—their arrogance, their ignorance—would collapse.

One day, they would all look back at this moment and regret.

But today was not that day.

For now, Ochieng walked toward his classroom, still hidden, still unnoticed.

Still waiting.
