Chapter 22 - Chapter 22

Ni Moqiang stretched out her slender hands, trying her best to support her father's staggering body, but she found that she was unable to do so. She shouted in a panic, "Dad, Dad! What's wrong with you?"

Ni Moqiang was so frightened by his ashen face that she was at a loss. Seeing that her father was about to fall to the ground, she anxiously turned her head, wanting to call for help from Qi Youling, only to find that she had already slipped out of the door.

With a dull thud, Ni Zhengguo finally lost consciousness and collapsed to the ground. Ni Moqiang dashed to the sofa, grabbed the phone, and dialed the emergency center's number.

The ambulance came roaring in the distance, its siren wailing like a death knell. The medical staff hastily carried Ni Zhengguo onto the stretcher, and Ni Moqiang followed closely behind and got into the ambulance.

The scorching sun seemed to be burning up the whole of Taiwan. Sitting in the ambulance, Ni Moqiang watched as several medical staff carried out emergency treatment on her father. Sweat dripped down from her forehead. Was it hot? No! It was cold sweat! She turned to look out of the window and, for no apparent reason, shivered. A sense of foreboding welled up in her heart.

The sunlight shining in through the window was so dazzling that it made people dizzy, but she didn't even have the urge to blink. Even though her eyes were stung by the bright and blinding sunlight to the point of tears, she didn't dare to blink.

Dad, please don't have anything wrong with you, please! She tightly grasped her father's hand and refused to let go no matter how the doctor persuaded her. She didn't know whether she didn't dare to let go or didn't want to. All she knew was that perhaps if she let go, she would never be able to hold this hand that had once given her warmth and love again.

Holding his hand for a long time had made her palm damp with sweat, but she didn't loosen her grip even a bit. Her helpless expression made the middle - aged female nurse accompanying them feel sorry for her.

"Miss, don't worry. We'll be at the hospital soon."

She sat expressionlessly beside Ni Zhengguo, her face pale and her big eyes filled with fear and tears. She couldn't hear the nurse's gentle consolation anymore. Her mind was just buzzing, and she couldn't think at all.

When the door of the emergency room opened, Ni Moqiang was standing in the corner outside. Her big eyes stared fixedly at the doctor who came out, and she couldn't move her legs at all. She saw the doctor approaching her step by step, and she shrank further into the corner. She turned her face away to avoid looking at the tense and regretful expression on his face.

"I'm sorry, miss. We've done our best. Please accept our condolences."

There was a thunderclap in her mind, and suddenly, it was pitch black in front of her eyes. That phrase "please accept our condolences" was like a bolt from the blue, shattering her world into pieces.

Stiffly, she turned her head. The doctor saw a face as pale as a ghost. There wasn't a trace of moisture in her bloodshot eyes. They were as dark and dull as a stagnant pool of water, unable to stir up the slightest ripple. With a sigh of regret, he shook his head and comforted her in a low voice, "Miss, don't be too sad. The dead can't be brought back to life. Take care of the funeral arrangements." As he spoke, he let out another long sigh and turned to walk away slowly.

Ni Moqiang's body trembled as she leaned against the cold wall, unable to move at all. Her world was collapsing bit by bit, just like the sand sculptures on the beach. The sunlight penetrated the blue glass and shone on her, but it didn't have the scorching temperature. What was left was a touch of coolness that seeped from her skin all the way into her heart.
