Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1

"Why is my life so difficult?" I muttered, my thoughts slipping out louder than I intended. Oops someone gave me a weird look, and I smiled awkwardly. "Sorry," I mumbled, lowering my gaze to the worn sandals on my feet.

Urgh, Audrey, must you talk out loud? I scolded myself internally; even with thousands of thoughts swirling in my head, I could still pick out my earlier thoughts.

Why is my life so difficult? I mean, why can't it just be different and easier?

Being a lonely orphan couldn't make my life more difficult, but searching for a Job for six months after graduation and not seeing eligible jobs is so infuriating, The frustration was maddening. This is supposed to be the most critical phase of my life, yet I'm stuck. I don't know anyone important, heck I don't even have connections. I thought about how far I'd come, "Audrey, you've got this!" I said aloud, trying to keep my spirits up. I'd been repeating that mantra for months, and now my savings are almost down.

"Oww!" I groaned, as I stumbled and landed on the pavement. "Can my day ever be smooth for once?" I grumbled, brushing myself off. "Seriously can't I have a good conversation in my head without interruption?" I'm thinking about my life, and it still counts as a conversation, with a loud sigh I got up to continue my walk home, As I took another step, I noticed the sole of my left sandal was damaged. "Damn this day!" With annoyance I ripped it off my feet, I guess I'm just gonna walk home barefooted, "Should I just buy a new pair of sandal?" I paused on my track, debating with myself. Audrey your savings are running low. "But I don't want to look like my day." I argued silently, having a rethink in my head

"Urgh, fine, you win," I relented with a sigh, glancing around my surrounding for a nearby store.

I was going to lose a few dollars from my savings, and the thoughts came again, "Audrey! you can't look like your day," I said, ending the inner turmoil going on in my head.

Spotting a mall ahead of me I walked in to look for the cheapest pair of sandals I could afford.

***

"Hi," I greeted the lady behind the counter, and she answered with a polite smile; noticing the nametag on her chest; Sally was written in bold letters. I reached into my bag to bring out my credit card, but it wasn't there; I searched my bag furiously, Sally was staring at me.

"Give me a minute. I can't find my card," I said to her with an embarrassed smile.

"Where is my card?" goodness my panic grew! Placing my bag on the counter, I poured out the contents from the bag to the counter, still searching for my card; where could it be?

"I didn't open my bag on my way," I thought to myself.

"Did I perhaps leave it at home?" omg I hate situations like this! Different thoughts kept swirling in my head.

"Do you guys accept cash?", I think I lost my card.

"No we don't", Sally replied apologetically

"O-oh okay", I turned back to return the sandals.

"It's fine. You can leave them on the counter," I heard Sally's voice behind me.

"Thank you", I said to her.

"No problem," she replied.

With a sigh, I walked out of the mall barefoot; I guess I'm walking home without shoes after all. Can a miracle just happen on this not-so-good day? I seriously want to scream right now.

"Miss?" I heard a voice called behind me.

I thought I was imagining it, until I felt a tap on my shoulder. StartIed I turned back to see who was calling me; I saw a man in a black suit, shiny shoes, and a nice haircut. My eyes flicked over him, not my fault. He's good-looking, then I looked at him and found him staring at me with a smile that screamed, I know you were checking me out.

Argh this is so awkward, with an embarrassing smile I said,

"Hi", I could die of shame right now, Audrey how could you let him know you were checking him out, bringing me out of my thought, I saw his mouth moving, but couldn't pick out what he said.

"Sorry?" I asked

"I said, my boss said to give you this," He said, stretching the pair of sandals I picked at the mall a few minutes ago.

I was confused, still staring at the sandals; I looked up at him, and he stretched his hand and signaled with his eyes to take the sandals.

"Your boss? are they for me? " he nodded his head curtly, stretched his other hand, and dropped it in my hands.

Still baffled I watched him as he walked towards a shiny sleek black car, I got back to my senses.

"Hey!" I ran up to him as I called him.

"I didn't get your name?".

"Sam," He gave a one-word reply.

"Urm your boss_".

Cutting me off, he said, "He said not to bother." Rude.

"Can I at least get a name?" I asked

"Adrian," He replied, rounding the car and entering the driver seat."

I had the feeling someone was watching me; I got the intuition that it was the so-called boss, Adrian; I mouthed Thank you, before the car zoomed off.

Bending down, I put on the sandals, stood up, and continued my journey home".

A miracle happened after all, it would have been nice if I had seen Adrian's face.

I guess both the employer and the employee are birds of the same feathers.

"Tch so rude," laughing at my thoughts, I realized I'd gotten home.

Grrrrr, I heard my stomach rumble, I was glad to be home. I opened the fridge, but there was nothing for dinner. The cupboard wasn't any better, clearly I need to go grocery shopping. I thought frustrated.

"Why is it empty for goodness sake?" I thought, feeling exasperated as I couldn't even find a single grain of cereal.

Feeling frustrated and lightheaded. I was about to step out of my apartment, then I remembered I still hadn't seen my card, so I went back inside to search for it. To my relief, I found it on my couch. Thank goodness I didn't lose it!

I headed out, got my groceries, made a satisfying dinner, and ate until I was full.

Now, I'm too tired to get up and walk back to my bed. I was drifting off to sleep when suddenly, a loud thud, jolted me awake.
