The scene opens with two high school girls one popular and the other the latter's best female friend.

Rapunzel: OMG, I'm so excited for the spring formal! Who are you going with, Gina?

Gina: I'm going with Tyler. He's really cute!

Rapunzel: That's awesome! I'm still deciding between Jake and Ryan. They both asked me.

Gina: Wow, you're so lucky! What's it like having two guys fight over you?

Rapunzel: It's actually kind of stressful. I don't want to hurt either of their feelings.

Gina: I can imagine. So, what's the plan for the formal? Are we going to meet up beforehand?

Rapunzel: Yeah, let's meet at my place at 6. We can take pics and get ready together.

Gina: Sounds like a plan! I'll bring my camera.

Rapunzel: Awesome! See you then!

(Gina leaves,meanwhile, Mother Gothel, Rapunzel's step mom is watching Rapunzel from afar)

Mother Gothel: (to herself) Rapunzel is getting too popular. She's going to forget about me and my plans for her (calling out to Rapunzel) Rapunzel, come here for a minute!

Rapunzel: (sighing) What's up, Mother Gothel?

Mother Gothel: I just wanted to remind you that you need to focus on your studies and forget about this silly formal.

Rapunzel: But Mother Gothel, I've already bought my dress and everything!

Mother Gothel: (sternly) I don't care about your dress, Rapunzel. What I care about is your future.

Rapunzel: (frustrated) You never let me have any fun!

Mother Gothel: (angrily) That's because I'm trying to protect you, Rapunzel!

Rapunzel: (defiantly) I don't need your protection, Mother Gothel! I can take care of myself!

(Rapunzel storms off, leaving Mother Gothel looking worried)

At home, Rapunzel texted Gina and told her everything that happened.

Rapunzel: (texting Gina) Hey, Gina! You won't believe what just happened with Mother Gothel!

Gina: (texting back) What happened?

Rapunzel: (texting) She's trying to ruin my life! She doesn't want me to go to the formal.

Gina: (texting) That's so unfair! Don't worry, we'll figure something out.

Rapunzel: (texting) Thanks, Gina! You're the best!

Jake: Dude, I'm so nervous about asking Rapunzel to the formal.

Ryan: Yeah, me too! I really like her.

Jake: I know, me too! But I think she likes me more.

Ryan: Oh yeah? What makes you think that?

Jake: Well, we've been talking a lot lately, and she seems really into me.

Ryan: Hmm, I'm not giving up yet! I'm going to ask her to the formal too!

(Both Jake and Ryan decide to ask Rapunzel to the formal, unaware of the other's plans)
