In one of the realms, there was a village nestled among the mountains. In this village, there was no source of light other than sunlight; therefore, nights were pitch black. Because of this darkness, accidents frequently occurred. The injuries caused by these accidents were not well received by the villagers, so long ago, they established a rule: At night—what they called "when the darkness arrives"—no one was to go outside. This story tells what happened to two young people who broke that rule.
Neim was slowly making his way toward the house where Duis lived. At that moment, he saw Duis's mother, Gelan.
Neim: "Aunt Gelan, where is Duis?"
Gelan: "He went to fetch water from the well, my child."
Neim sighed a little, thanked Gelan, and set off. Neim had to go to the other end of the village. As he walked, Neim noticed something: every time the darkness lifted, he did the same things. While passing through the village, Granny Selm was, as always, calling out her warnings:
Selm: "Watch out for your grass-green eyes, my boy! Oh, and be careful with your golden hair, my boy!"
Neim kissed Aunt Selm's hand and continued on his way. Then, he took an apple from Uncle Baf's tree. Uncle Baf got a little angry, but Neim didn't pay much attention. As he went further, he passed by Granny Zehp's house and took some tomatoes from her.
As Neim approached the well, his mind grew even more confused. Why was nothing different in his life? Why did they live in a place surrounded by mountains? Would he spend his life doing the same things over and over? These questions gnawed at his mind, making his head ache.
Eventually, he realized he had reached the well and looked up at the massive cave above. "Why is that place even there?" Neim wondered. Were the old stories true? Neim lost himself in thought for a while, then turned toward the sound coming from the well. Duis was there. Everything in Neim's mind vanished in an instant. He slowly crept toward Duis, moving stealthily.
