Chapter 1 - 1 The Evolution of Sports

"People don't play football in de savannah like before. Kids don't even run outside anymore. Have you ever seen a teenager these days? Always on their phone and it making the whole generation slow an' lazy."

Akeem Brown leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, waiting for a response. Across the glass conference table, Malik Thomas, Minister of Digital Innovation, was ranting about the state of sports in Trinidad.

They were in InnoTech Tower, the sleekest, most advanced corporate building in Port of Spain. The meeting room's floor-to-ceiling window's overlooked the city...the Brian Lara Stadium, the twinkling lights of the Queen's Park Savannah, and in the distance the ocean stretching toward the horizon.

Akeem was tired of hearing this same argument a billion of times. This wasn't a Trinidadian problem, it was a global issue.

"Minister Thomas," Akeem said smoothly, "That's exactly why we're here."

He tapped on his smartwatch, and the glass table flickered to life, holographic displays lighting up in the dimly lit room. Floating before them was the prototype for RevX, the most impressive tech project the Caribbean had ever seen.

On the display, virtual athletes dash across the futuristic stadium, leaping in zero-gravity zones, dodging holographic obstacles, and executing impossible trick shots—all from the comfort of a VR headset.

"Trinidad is known for its athletes, correct? Akeem asked, scrolling through historical clips of iconic moments; Soca Warriors' 2006 World Cup debut, Keshorn Walcott's gold medal throw, Brian Lara's record breaking innings.

"But nowadays, people care more about FIFA and NBA 2K than real sports. That's the future. People love competition but they love their screens even more.

Malik frowned but didn't argue.

Kyla Garcia, the project's lead developer, leaned in. "We're not replacing traditional sports. We're evolving them. RevX is a full-body virtual experience. Plays feel every movement like it's real. We're talking speed, reflexes, strategy and all the intensity of physical sports but amplified in a world where the only limit is your skill.

Akeem gestured to the screen.

"And the best part? It has no age limits, no physical restrictions. A fourteen year old from Laventille can go head to head with a thirty five year old from San Fernando. It's all about talent."

Malik tapped his fingers on the table. "And how exactly does this benefit Trinidad?"

"Simple." Akeem grinned. "You want economic growth? We bring in tech investors. You want youth engagement? We launch RevX academies across the country. Imagine Caribbean esports leagues, where youngers complete in tournaments...prizes, sponsorships, careers built on this. Think about Carnival, but it's not just about costumes and parades. RevX is just like that but with competition"

Malik smirked. "So, you're saying RevX can turn Trinidad into one massive esports festival?"

Akeem grinned, his confidence growing. "Exactly. We'll have citizens feel the thrill of esports just like Carnival. It would be like a Calypso competition, every move, every play cheered by the crowd!"

Malik got listened attentively, his glasses shifting down his nose slightly. He had to admit it was brilliant.

Yoshiko Fujiwara, the CFO, finally spoke up. "And let's be honest, the revenue will be massive. Equipment sales, sponsorships, global licensing. Trinidad won't just be known for its music and culture...we'll finally have a name in the Caribbean's gaming history.

The room went silent.

Then Malik smiled slightly. "How does the VR gear work?"

"I'm glad you asked sir!" Kyla chimed in, "This VR gear is unlike anything anyone has ever seen before. It's not just a headset it's a full body suit connected directly to your brain. The system was designed to read your neural impulses, syncing your thoughts and movements with the digital world. So even if you weren't physically moving in real life, people watching on screens could see you sprinting, dodging or jumping as if you were actually in the game."

Malik sighed, "You talk too much. But alright let's make it history."

As the meeting concluded, Akeem felt his adrenaline rush. RevX was about to change everything.

Days went by and Akeem and his team traveled the Caribbean, meeting government officials, investors, and tech companies. They spoke to school principals, sport organizations and youth leaders trying to explain the potential of RevX.

But despite the excitement surrounding the idea, there were still questions. Would people take virtual sports seriously? Would the kids give up their phones to compete in this new form of athleticism?

Memories of Akeem's childhood began playing in his mind. Playing football in the savannah meant everything to him. He remembered when he scored a goal and the community would come together to cheer. But all of that was gone. The savannah was once admired for its vast expanse of lush greenery of its two hundred and sixty acres. Now, the savannah was just there for an occasional jogger or kites getting stuck in the trees during Easter time.

Late one night, after a long day of meetings, Akeem sat alone alone in in his apartment, staring out of the window at the sunset. His phone notifications went off but he chose to ignore them. He wasn't focused on the world right now, he was focused on the world he was about to create.

His sister, Talia, walked into the living room, holding a plate of food in her hands. "Are you okay?" she asked, setting the plate down on the table.

"I'm thinking about the future. RevX is going to change everything." Akeem's voice was quiet, almost to himself. "It's not about games or sports...it's about bringing back what society lost. We're giving kids a chance to be more than just spectators. They can feel like athletes and dream big."

Talia raised an eyebrow and then noticed the RevX headset and gear laying on the table beside him. "Is that even safe? It looks heavy."

"Are you already doubting me Talia? My team and I tested it so I know damn well it has no defects. It's a way to bring society together, to keep them active and it'll make them want to make their lives better. Trust me. It'll change everything."

The launch of RevX arrived, giants screens were set up around Port of Spain. Young faces lit up as they watched the live broadcast of the first ever RevX tryouts.

Akeem, now fully suited up in his RevX gear, stood backstage. The room behind him was filled with energy, the sound of Kyla squealing with excitement and the rest of his team hurrying with last minute preparations. Malik stood next to him watching the scene unfold.

"Big day, huh?" Malik said.

Akeem smiled, adjusting his headset. "It's only the beginning."

The first round was live, athletes from all across the Caribbean competed in RevX's new hybrid game. RevX was combined with football, track, and basketball in a virtual arena. Akeem watched as competitors dashed across the screen, leaping, twisting and turning as they explored the VR world. They felt every hit, every jump, every twist in real life.

And the crowd? They were completely hooked.

The youth in the audience were glued to their phones and watched their peers compete. They didn't just want to play, they wanted to be a part of it.

Once they became interested, Akeem knew RevX had officially begun.

Meanwhile, Gabriel's sneakers slapped against the pavement as he sprinted through the busy streets of Port of Spain, dodging people, cars, and potholes. He was late, as usual.

"Oh gosh move nah!" Gabriel yelled, skidding around a corner with barely enough time to avoid a delivery truck. His adrenaline coursed throughout his veins as he pushed his body harder and faster.

The crowd parted for him as if they already could sense his presence. He could hear the distant humming of the RevX event taking place just a few blocks away, the electrifying sound of virtual athletes clashing in the arena. The tension that was building inside his chest was threatening to burst like a balloon.

His phone beeped in his pocket to alert him about a text from his mother but he didn't have time to check his screen, he was too busy slipping past pedestrians, nearly knocking over an elderly lady carrying a fruit basket.

"Watch where you going!" she yelled after him, but he was already gone.

His fingers twitched at his sides, aching to grab his headset. RevX wasn't a game, it was the game. The one everyone was talking about, the one that promised to change the world of sports forever. This wasn't just some regular Wii Sports virtual reality edition, it couldn't meet RevX's standards. Participants could actually feel the objects within the virtual world and move around like the real world. It was where your reflexes and your internet speed determined whether you'd win or lose.

Gabriel rounded the final corner, his heart racing, and there it was: RevX's arena, a massive, towering, building with holographic advertisements flashing all over the place. A huge crowd gathered outside, their faces lit up by the glow of screens showing highlights of previous matches; athletes leaping, diving and throwing punches in pixelated perfection.

He squeezed past a group of teenagers, overhearing their conversation about the latest match. "Man! I heard the new AI player can do flips in mid air!" one of them said.

Gabriel's pulse quickened. He had to see for himself. He was late but he didn't care.

When Gabriel made it to the entrance, panting and scanning the crowd, but it was clear he missed the first round of tryouts. He stood there rather bummed out.

Akeem noticed him looking frustrated and grabbed a stack of flyers and walked over to him.

"Don't worry, you haven't missed your chance."

He handed Gabriel a flyer. "Sign up here. Don't tell anyone there's a time limit...RevX's got space for everyone."

"Thank you," Gabriel muttered, gripping the flyer tightly.

Akeem tapped him on the shoulder. "No problem, RevX focuses on what you bring to the table."

Gabriel looked up, meeting Akeem's eyes. "You really think I can do this? I mean...I'm not an athlete or anything special. I'm not even good at video games."

"That's the beauty of it. You don't have to be a top athlete to succeed. What matters is what pushes you to continue doing what feels right to you...what you are meant to be." He pointed towards the crowd, now hyped up, eyes glued to the big screen. "Just like Carnival, everyone's got a chance to shine. The difference with RevX is that you're not limited by your size or strength. You got quick reflexes? Great. Strategy? Even Better."

Gabriel never thought about it that way. His mother would constantly nag him about focusing on his studies because to her, he was wasting his time chasing after his silly dreams, she almost convinced him. Key word, almost.

"Listen," Akeem continued, "No one expected RevX to be such a big hit but look at it now! People are starting to realize it's the real deal."

This was an eye opener for Gabriel, this could be his chance to prove his mother wrong. He didn't need to be the fastest or the strongest, he just needed to trust his instincts and adapt to the new world RevX was creating.

"I'm in."

Gabriel glanced at the screen, the glowing athletes moving past virtual obstacles. He couldn't just stand here and wait any longer, he wanted to be a part of this. No, he needed to be a part of this.

As Akeem walked away, tossing flyers to the crowd, Gabriel's hands trembled.
