Chapter 1 - The outbreak

Dr. Sophia Patel stared at the microscope slide in front of her, her eyes scanning the tiny, twisted cells that danced across the glass. It was a familiar sight, one she had seen countless times before in her years as a virologist. But something about this particular sample sent a shiver down her spine.

"Sophia, we need to talk," her colleague, Dr. Henry Lee, said, poking his head into the lab.

Sophia looked up, a question in her eyes. "What's going on?"

"It's the samples from the hospital," Henry said, his voice low and serious. "They're not what we expected."

Sophia's heart began to beat a little faster. "What do you mean?"

"They're showing signs of a highly contagious and deadly virus," Henry said, his eyes locked on Sophia's. "We're talking Ebola-level contagious. Maybe worse."

Sophia felt a cold dread creeping up her spine. "That's impossible," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "We would have seen something like this before."

Henry shook his head. "This is something new, Sophia. Something we've never seen before."

Sophia's mind was racing. She thought back to the countless hours she had spent studying viruses, trying to understand their behavior and how to stop them. But this...this was something different.

"What's the mortality rate?" Sophia asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Henry's face was grim. "It's over 90%."

Sophia felt like she had been punched in the gut. A mortality rate that high was almost unheard of. It was a death sentence.

"We need to get to work," Sophia said, her voice firm and resolute. "We need to find a cure for this thing, and fast."

Henry nodded, a look of determination on his face. "I'll get the team started on sequencing the virus. You start working on a potential treatment."

Sophia nodded, her mind already racing with possibilities. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but she was ready for the challenge.

Little did she know, this was just the beginning of a fight for humanity's survival.
