Chapter 1 - Yami Mokubre

There was nothing except unbearable pain for Yami Mokubre. He felt like he was being squeezed in an extreme hydraulic pressure. He felt like he was being constantly hammered on an anvil as he slithered in pain. He tried to scream… to groan… to let out miserable cries of pain but no words came from his mouth.

Yami Mokubre was everything a miserable man could be. He was 28 years of age and worked as a sales manager in private firm. And what could one expect from a corporate slave? A miserable and exhausting life.

From his childhood, Yami's life has been that of monotony and averageness. He belonged to an average middle class household and lived a middle class life. He was a neither a genius in studies nor the famous sportsman of the town and nor the bad bully of the school. Nor was he the handsome playboy. He was just average- average in everything he did.

As mentioned already, he was an average person- be it studies, sports or any other extra- curricular activities. And continuing his average life, after graduating from his college, he found himself employed in a corporate firm.

But in this life of being an average and monotony, there was a source and light of happiness- his parents. His mother and father had loved him dearly. They did not pressurise him with unnecessary expectations. Yami had not been pressurised into trying to be excellent, in trying to get extraordinary result or to be an unparalleled sportsman.

His parents had always wished only for Yami for remain happy. They had wanted him to live a content and a happy life and nothing more.

But it all came crashing down. His parents had died in a car crash 6 years earlier and that episode had left him devasted. The little happiness and the joy he had had was gone. Yami almost forgot to smile. He never felt happiness thereafter.

This had been a normal evening for him. He had left his work at the usual time, had his usual dinner at the usual place and had taken the usual route to his home.

While he had been walking on the footpath, sudden screams emerged among the crowd and this drew Yami's attention.

He looked at his side and was shocked at the scene unfolding in front of him. Three people dressed completely in black- from head to toe, were running amok in the crowd. Well, this was not the shocking part.

The shocking part was that each of them was a wielding a long dagger in their hands and with the dagger they were randomly trying to stab people.

The sudden attack caused chaos and panic among the pedestrians walking on the road. It was all mayhem and screams as everyone tried to scurry away to safety.

Yami was fortunate as the attackers were at a bit of distance from him. Or so he thought.

He was about to move even further away when he felt a chill in his spine. No, it was not the metaphorical chill but a literal chill. It was a cold metallic sensation.

With this sensation came a feeling of immense pain as he felt the presence of a sharp object inside his back.

Yami felt all the strength leaving his body and with great difficulty he turned his neck around only to see another man dressed in black grinning at him wildly.

Yami did not even understand what exactly had happened as he lost his consciousness and his life and he collapsed on the ground.

Yami did not know how much time had passed but finally that unbearable pain had left his body. He could finally feel his body and he could feel that if he wanted some sound could come out of his throat.

Even so, the lingering effect was still present.

He still felt the pain in his back and the memory of the knife stabbing through his back resurfaced in his mind.

In response to the painful memory, Yami's eyes snapped open in shock and his eyes bulged. Even his breathing had turned rugged as his heart pounded against his chest.

He took deep breaths and he tried to calm his mind. He then looked around his surrounding trying to analyse and understand his situation.

He was yet to think a single thing when an immense amount of pain assaulted his mind.

The pain was uncannily similar to the first time. But this time, it lasted for mere few seconds and when Yami opened his eyes, he was in a state deep shock and pain and grief. Tears were flowing uncontrollably from his eyes.

The cause of his shock was because he had transmigrated to another born or probably reborn into it. For Yami could not decide that if he had just arrived in this body or had been reborn with this body and had awakened the memories of his past life just now. Even so, it did not actually matter.

For all the memories of this life felt like his own. Every feeling from the smallest of pain to the happiest moment of his life, he felt like he had lived on his own. He felt as if he lived through every bit of emotions that his body had felt.

Now, the world he had arrived in was the infamous world of Demon Slayer.

And yes, to know it with confirmation, Yami had encountered a demon the previous night or probably many days back as he had been unconscious.

Yami, which was his name in this life too, had been born in a poor household in rural Japan. He currently was of 15 years old. His family had comprised of his parents and an elder sister.

He along with his family lived in slight wilderness where a group of few households had formed a small village.

His father was a blacksmith and a wood cutter. Despite the limited luxury in their life, Yami and his family were a bunch of joyous people. His parents and his big sister had loved him dearly. His father and mother and sister were always there for him.

Yami would giggle and laugh like the child he was but all of it came crashing, again.

It all began late in the night when a sudden scream jolted Yami from his sleep.

The first thing which Yami greeted was the haunting image of a demon with his hands piercing the stomach of his father and mother.

The demon gave a grin to Yami and before Yami could even move, the demon swiped his claws and his big sister, who had been sleeping next to his mother was killed.

Rage had taken over Yami as he lunged towards the demon. But to a demon, he had been nothing more than an ant.

The demon had kicked him in the stomach and he was sent flying and smashed upon the wall. A wooden construct which was emerging from the wall had pierced his back and Yami knew no more.
