Hazel raised her head blankly, her red eyes looking at the back of the mother and son. Their words were like a candle lit in her dark world.
Why was she crying stupidly in the first place? Indeed, even if she wanted to cry, it should be a tear of joy.
She shouldn't be crying. She should be relieved—grateful to see his true colors before it was too late. For him to dare to do this before marriage—wouldn't he basically sleep with even the maids in their house if they ever had one while sending her away to potbellied chieves to secure contract for his business.
She should be happy, indeed.
She wiped her tears away after consoling herself, even though her heart was still bleeding, she can go through this.
She hailed a taxi to her work.
Before getting out of the taxi, she put on her sunglasses and was thankful she had brought them along; otherwise, with her puffy eyes, she would attract too much attention today.
"Hey," her best friend, Hannah, greeted her as soon as she sat down.
"You arrived pretty early today," she commented, turning her chair to face Hazel.
Hazel actually wasn't a latecomer, but she wasn't the earliest either, so arriving at this time was pretty early.
"What? Why are you not taking off your glasses? Are you a celebrity now?" She reached out to remove Hazel's glasses, and her cheeky smile slowly disappeared when she saw her puffy eyes.
Hazel was shocked by her advance and snatched back her glasses, immediately putting them on. She even looked around to make sure no one had seen her.
"Who made you cry?" Hannah gritted her teeth, her tone boiling with anger. She spoke pretty loudly, garnering everyone's attention.
"Lower your voice, please," Hazel pleaded.
Hannah opened her mouth to say something, and Hazel quickly stood up and pulled her to the restroom.
"Now, will you tell me?" Hannah demanded, her tone hard.
Hazel closed the door behind them. She gave a slight sigh as she turned around before uttering in a low voice, meeting Hannah's eyes, which were spewing with fire, "He cheated on me, Hannah."
It was silent.
It took Hannah a few seconds to understand what Hazel was saying, and she frowned, her tone punctuated with clear disbelief.
"Who cheated on you? Gavin? That Gavin?"
Even though Gavin's looks were only passable and his body wasn't that attractive, he was someone her best friend liked, so she tried not to make bad comments about him. Especially since he always treated Hazel well.
The two had been dating for about two years now and their relationship had always seemed good. Gavin was always sweet and gentle and he would always come to pick Hazel up whenever they worked overtime. He sometimes even bought dinner for their entire team. She had expected to receive their marriage invitation in a few years and naturally didn't consider the possibility of him cheating on Hazel. It was almost null. He looks hen-pecked.
"Yes, it's him." Hazel affirmed with a nod.
Hannah felt her anger rose like a volcano, she felt betrayed on her bestfriend's behalf.
At the thought of how Hazel had always been thrifty, giving all her salary to him and spending so little on herself, she was the girlfriend any man could ask for.
"Tell me, who is that b*tch he cheated on you with?" she demanded, trying to sound calm.
"...Jasmine."
"Jas—Jasmine? That b*tch who just occupied your house?! She has the audacity to take your man?! How dare she?"
Of course, Hannah had an impression of Jasmine. She was beautiful and sweet-tongued, the perfect definition of a vixen. She always tried to provoke Hazel, but she didn't expect it to be to this extent.
She had to take a deep breath lest she stormed over to Hazel's villa and charged at that little bitch.
"Elaborate, please?" she requested, running a finger through her hair.
Hazel sighed and explained it to her, omitting the part about her one-night stand, which Gavin had orchestrated. She knew that if she told Hannah, her friend would probably not listen to any excuses asking for her to stay calm, and would directly confront Gavin and give him a good beating. And that would only get Hannah into trouble, not the adulterous couple.
"In your kitchen?!" Hannah gritted her teeth. "So what did you do to them?!"
Hazel wiped her eyes, which had already turned red, and said with a smile, "What do you think I can do to them? I can only hand them over to karma."
Actually, Hazel wasn't willing to forgive them. She wanted them to pay for what they had done. Not only did they cheat on her, but they also nearly had her raped, and that hurt more than anything else.
Hannah rolled her eyes as if she had expected that. "Whatever, I will just find something to do about it."
Hazel's brows furrowed as she held her hand. "Don't do anything rash, okay?"
She knew what she was saying, knowing well what kind of a person her friend was. Hannah was fiercely protective. There had been a time when she even beat someone to a hospital because he tried to grope Hazel. She didn't want that to happen again.
"Haaa, stop worrying, okay? I'm not gonna do anything rash," Hannah said with a sweet smile that showed her perfect white teeth. But Hazel knew that smile—it was a big fake smile.
She sighed outwardly, but her heart was full of warmth. Hannah's actions touched her deeply.
"Let's go, lots of work is piling up for us." Hannah took her hand and led her out.
They had just taken their seats when Hannah stood back up and cleared her throat before announcing loudly, "Everyone, I want to inform you that my friend, Hazel, is now single. So to the men here who wanted to woo her, this is your chance now to show how masculine and doting you can be! Also, after work, we are going to karaoke. You can come if you want to. Everything is on me!"
