Chereads / Omni-Builder: The Architect of Worlds / Chapter 2 - Dawn of Innovation

Chapter 2 - Dawn of Innovation

The first rays of dawn filtered through the shelter's cracks when the attacks finally ceased. Nathan hadn't closed his eyes all night, his gaze fixed on the dancing statistics before him. Each Shadow's impact had made the walls tremble, and he had spent hours watching the numbers slowly decline, helpless, wondering if the structure would hold until morning.

[Congratulations: First objective completed]

[Final physical resistance: 42/100]

[New skill unlocked: Basic Magical Reinforcement]

[Survival bonus: +50 skill points]

[Progression interface accessible]

"Progression interface?" He rubbed his eyes, fatigue blurring his vision. His engineer's mind couldn't help but compare all this to a video game, but the bruises covering his body and the visceral fear he had felt that night were very real.

[Opening menu...]

A new window appeared, filled with complex skill trees. Most were grayed out, inaccessible, but a few branches glowed invitingly. Nathan found himself smiling despite his fatigue – the tree's structure reminded him of the project planning diagrams he used on Earth.

Lost Technologies [???]

Nathan ran a hand over his tired face. "So that's how it works..." He mentally noted the "Lost Technologies" branch. Why was it different from the others? And why did this world seem to so naturally blend magic and technology?

A metallic noise made him start, interrupting his thoughts. Something had fallen outside, close to the shelter. His heart rate quickened, but the statistics remained stable.

[Shadow threat: Inactive]

[Diurnal period: Relative safety]

[Suggestion: Explore surroundings with caution]

He rose slowly, his muscles protesting after a night spent sitting on the hard ground. The light filtering through the cracks seemed normal, almost reassuring, but Nathan hadn't forgotten the horrors of the previous night. Those creatures of black mist, their red eyes, their cries that were nothing like anything on Earth...

Taking a deep breath, he pushed open the door. The morning light revealed a different landscape from yesterday. The Shadows' impacts had left dark marks on his shelter's walls, like acid burns. The stone itself seemed to have aged decades at the points of impact.

"Note to self," he muttered, "the Shadows don't just attack physically. They... corrupt matter?"

[Pertinent observation]

[New codex entry: Shadow Corruption]

[Advice: Corruption can be cleansed with magical essence]

His attention was drawn to the object that had made the noise. A rusted sword lay on the ground, half-buried in dust. It hadn't been there yesterday, he was certain. Had it always been there, simply hidden under debris? Or had it... appeared?

[New object detected]

[Analysis in progress...]

[Guard's Sword (degraded)]

Quality: Poor Condition: Severely damaged Special: Traces of residual magic History: Forged approximately 200 years ago Last owner: City Guard [Data corrupted] [Possible recycling: 8 units oxidized iron + 2 units magical essence]

"Magical essence?" Nathan picked up the sword carefully. It was lighter than he'd expected, and despite the rust, he could make out patterns engraved on the blade. Runes perhaps? They seemed to pulse faintly with a bluish glow.

[Tutorial: Magical essence is a rare resource]

[Uses: Reinforcement, enchantment, catalysis]

[Notice: Residual magical essence can reveal fragments of the past]

[Recommendation: Activate recycling skill]

The last words intrigued him. Fragments of the past? He examined the sword more carefully, and for a brief moment, he thought he saw... something else. An overlay, like a ghost image: the sword, new and shining, held by a man in uniform standing before majestic walls. The vision vanished as quickly as it had come, leaving him with more questions than answers.

Nathan nodded. "Alright, let's invest those points. If this city is full of objects like this one, might as well learn how to make use of them."

[Skill "Material Recycling" activated]

[25 skill points deducted]

[New action available: Deconstruct]

[Recycling interface unlocked]

Focusing as he had done for construction, Nathan visualized the sword decomposing into its base components. The blade glowed blue before disintegrating. The runes illuminated one last time, like a final breath, before transforming into tiny orbs of bluish light.

[Recycling successful!]

[Obtained: 8 units oxidized iron]

[Obtained: 2 units magical essence]

[Memory fragment recovered: "...the walls will hold, my Lord. As long as the guard watches..."]

[First use bonus: +5 skill points]

Nathan remained motionless for a moment, troubled by this fragment of conversation from another time. This city had a history, and perhaps understanding its fall would help him survive. But for now, he had more urgent priorities.

"Now for the reinforcement..."

[Skill "Magical Reinforcement" activated]

[25 skill points deducted]

[New construction interface available]

[Warning: First magical reinforcement - Tutorial recommended]

"No tutorial," he said, his engineer's mind taking over. "Just show me the interface."

The schematics that now appeared before him were different. Lines of force ran through his shelter's structure, revealing its weak points and stress zones. It was like seeing through X-rays, but with an additional dimension. The points where the Shadows had struck glowed threatening red, indicating corrupted areas.

"Fascinating..." Nathan muttered. It was like structural simulation software, but in augmented reality. "If I use the magical essence here and here..." He indicated the most damaged points. "And if I create a reinforcement circuit that follows the natural force lines..."

[Analysis: Innovative design detected]

[Creativity bonus: +10% efficiency]

He mentally placed the luminous orbs at strategic points, connecting them with force lines that followed the structure's natural geometry. The magic diffused through the walls like water through a sponge, but in a more organized way than he had anticipated. The corrupted areas seemed to purify upon contact with the magical essence.

[Reinforcement applied]

[Physical resistance: 42/100 → 65/100]

[Magical resistance: 15/100 → 35/100]

[New property: Passive regeneration]

[Additional bonus: Corruption resistance]

[Note: Your engineering approach improves enchantment efficiency]

The sun climbed higher in the sky, illuminating the surrounding ruins. Nathan ventured cautiously from his shelter, observing the dead city with new eyes. Dozens of objects now glowed to his enhanced vision, each potentially a source of materials and magical essence. Some emitted a stronger glow than others, perhaps promising more than mere resources.

[Warning: 14 hours until next night cycle]

[Environmental scan complete]

[Detected within 100-meter radius:

Recyclable objects: 47 Ancient magic traces: 12 Points of interest: 3 Corrupted zones: 8] [Warning: Larger structures attract more attention]

Nathan contemplated the ruins stretching before him, his engineer's mind already buzzing. A simple shelter wouldn't suffice in the long term. He needed a proper workshop, a place where he could experiment, combine technology and magic. And most importantly, understand what had happened to this city.

His gaze settled on what appeared to be the remains of a forge. The spot was perfect – the walls still standing offered a solid foundation, and the chimney, though dilapidated, could be restored.

[New project available: Basic Workshop]

[Optimal location detected]

[Prerequisites:

100 units common stone

50 units wood

30 units iron

10 units magical essence]

[Location bonus: Usable pre-existing structure]

[Estimated construction time: 45 minutes]

[Advantage: Ancient forge might unlock additional schematics]

He set out, analyzing every piece of debris, every ruin he passed. The fragments of a vanished civilization surrounded him, each potentially carrying a fragment of this world's history. A history he would need to understand if he wanted to survive.

A piercing cry in the sky made him start. Far above the ruins, a dark silhouette soared. Much too large to be an ordinary bird. Its wings seemed to absorb sunlight, creating a moving shadow on the ground.

[Warning: Magical life form detected]

[Classification: Class 2 aerial predator]

[Preliminary analysis:

Estimated wingspan: 6 meters

Magical signature: High

Behavior: Territorial Threat: Significant]

[Recommendation: Stay close to structures]

Nathan slowly backed toward his shelter, his gaze fixed on the flying creature. The night had its Shadows, but the day clearly had its own dangers. He needed to prepare accordingly.

[New schematic available: Observation Post]

[Cost:

25 units stone

15 units wood

5 units magical essence]

[Advantage: Early detection of aerial threats Increased scan range Elevated defense point]

Time was pressing. Night would return, and with it the Shadows. But this time, he would be better prepared.

"One thing at a time," he muttered, beginning to gather materials. "First the workshop, then the defenses."

[Main objective updated: Workshop construction]

[Secondary objectives added:

Collect information about the city Observe aerial predator Map secure zone]

[Progress: 0%]

[Time remaining until nightfall: 13 hours, 45 minutes]

Nathan picked up a piece of rusted metal, weighing it in his hand. Somewhere in these ruins lay the answers to his questions. Why had he been chosen? What had happened to this city? And most importantly, how could he prevent it from happening again?

["...the signs were there, but we were too busy building to see them. Now it's too late. May the Architects forgive us..."]

The real challenge was just beginning.
