Chapter 1 - 序章

Brother... someone whispered in the darkness. What a bother! Which kid got lost? Brother, the child called again. So annoying, so annoying, so annoying! Brother? There's none here! Brother... Then I'll go then... the child said quietly, and the voice gradually faded away. He suddenly felt a bit reluctant in his heart, that distant voice, carrying a sense of loneliness, made one think of the child's receding figure, like a little hunting dog that had been abandoned. Okay, okay, okay! What street, what number, what door do you live at? What's the unreliable brother's name? I'll send you home! He flipped over and sat up. He sat on the ground in the sunlight, dressed in a spotless white robe as bright as the moon, seeing a white tea flower blooming in a coarse porcelain vase. Across that flower, a child in white held an ink brush and was writing at the desk, stroke by stroke. Hey, you didn't leave? Are you playing with me? he wanted to say but didn't. He naturally did something; there was a plate of grapes on the table, looking lush and juicy. He picked off a small bunch from it and handed it across the table to the child. The child looked up, eyes flashing with alarm, like an alert young beast. Brother, there are many people outside. What nonsense! It's so quiet here. He thought. But naturally, he said something else: Maybe they will die? But, Constantine, don't be afraid. Don't be afraid, with Brother around, don't be afraid... But why... Don't eat me? Eat me, and any cage can be broken through by Brother. The child said seriously. Eat me... You? Although you look very fair and tender, it doesn't mean you taste better than a hamburger. I just ate one for lunch and am not hungry at all. He thought. You are great food, but if I do that, it would be too lonely. For thousands of years, only you and I have been together. Once again, he said something insincere. But death is really sad; it's like being sealed in a black box forever, ever dark... It's like groping in the dark night, but the hand stretched out can never touch anything... The fate of the abandoned clan is to cross the wasteland, raise the war flag once again, and return to our homeland. Death is not scary; it's just a long sleep. Before I can devour this world, rather than travel alone, it's better to rest peacefully. We will still wake up. It was unbelievable that such cool lines could come out of his mouth. Brother... When raising the war flag and devouring the world, will you eat me? The child looked at him with clear pupils flashing with anticipation. What the hell! Is this some kind of play about a cannibalistic family who love each other dearly? But your family ethics are really strange! Yes, in that case, you will be with me, ruling the world! But he nodded slightly and said in a cold and authoritative tone. The child poured a cup of water from the kettle and gave it to him; he drank it in confusion. I have to go now, Brother; goodbye. The child stood up. He wanted to say he wasn't his brother and that he had mistaken him, but he just casually said: Goodbye, be careful yourself; humans cannot be trusted. Another strange line; no head or tail. The child went out and closed the door behind him; he listened as the child's footsteps grew fainter and finally disappeared completely. He suddenly felt a bit scared; he thought he must have lost his mind letting such a small child walk alone on the streets; what if someone abducted him? Not knowing how far he would have to walk to find his brother. He became restless and couldn't sit still anymore; finally unable to hold back, he stood up and ran towards the door. He pushed open the door; intense light shone on his white robe; it wasn't sunlight but firelight. In the raging flames of hell engulfing the city which wailed in agony with scorched human figures running amidst them while thousands of swords fell from the sky; giant signboards burned and flipped down; on them were the characters White Emperor—it was pure hell indeed! In the very center of the city stood a tall pole; the child hung at the top of it with eyes closed while the flames of the entire city burned him; it was like a grand sacrifice! His heart ached terribly; it felt like a knife was cutting into it—the loss of someone important because of a mistake he had made! He suddenly remembered something; yes, that's right; he was that child's brother! Constantine! He shouted that name aloud! He abruptly sat up; opened his eyes in the afternoon sunlight; breathing quickly with body covered in cold sweat amid the noise of light rail traffic outside! Suddenly he found this sound so pleasant—reminding him that everything in his dream was fake; he was just in an ordinary world!
